The Best Dress Watches Under $200

With $200 to spend, a dress watch can be chosen for the occasion rather than as a compromise. Here is what to wear to the office, to black tie, to a daytime wedding and to dinner, and what each costs.

Under $100, the right dress watch is the one that breaks the fewest rules. Double the budget and the question changes. Now there is room to choose a watch for a particular kind of occasion, because the established makers have dress watches between $120 and $260 and the online brands offer shapes that would cost thousands from a luxury house. Most people need one dress watch, and the best one for you depends on where you will wear it most.

So this guide is organised by occasion. Read the one that matches your calendar.

The office: a dress watch you wear every day

A work dress watch takes more punishment than a true dress watch. It gets knocked against desks, worn with everything from a suit to a sweater, and has to look right on a video call as well as in person. That pushes the choice toward steel on a bracelet, and toward a design with a little more presence than a pure dress watch.

Our pick is the Lucky Fours Santos at $129.99. It is a day date dress sports watch: a fluted bezel, a five link steel bracelet and windows for the day and the date. The fluted bezel is the detail that makes it work at a desk, because it catches light softly without the glare of a polished bezel. With 18 colorways there is a version for every office: Pearl and Ocean for conservative workplaces, Gold Pearl if you wear gold, and deeper reds and greens if you have more latitude. A steel dress watch in this spirit starts at about $11,500 at the top of the market, which is part of why the shape still reads as a serious watch. Our guide to expensive looking watches for the office has more options.

Just over budget, the Seiko Essentials SUR361 Black at $225 is the alternative for those who want an established maker. It is a 39mm steel watch with a black sunray dial and a day and date display, finished with the mix of brushed and polished surfaces Seiko does well at this price. It is more restrained than the Santos, and more forgettable on the wrist, but very correct.

Black tie: the rules are strict, the watch is simple

Black tie is the one occasion where the old rules still apply firmly. The watch should be slim, small, and on a black or dark leather strap, with a plain white, cream or black dial. No bracelet, no bezel numbers, nothing that sparkles more than your shirt studs.

The Timex Waterbury Classic 40mm at $149 is the best fit we found under $200. Its cream dial with Roman numerals is properly formal, and the stylized W of the old Waterbury Watch Company on the dial is a nod to Timex's nineteenth century roots in Connecticut. It ships on a tan leather strap, which is fine for daytime; for black tie, swap to black leather, a change that costs very little and takes a minute with spring bar tools. Under $100, the Lucky Fours Nassau on its fine steel bracelet is the alternative, covered in our dress watches under $100 guide.

If you want a mechanical watch for formal evenings and can stretch, the Timex Marlin 1965 Reissue Hand Wound 34mm at $259 is a 34mm reissue of a 1960s Timex with a hand wound movement. Its small size is exactly right for black tie, and winding it before you go out becomes part of getting dressed.

A daytime wedding: warm metals, lighter dials

The Santos in its box: a colored dial works at a summer wedding where black tie rules do not apply

Daytime weddings, christenings and garden parties are the occasions where a dress watch can relax. Lighter suits and linen call for lighter dials and warmer metals. Gold tone and rose gold tone come into their own here, and a colored dial is perfectly acceptable.

The Casio MTP1302PGC Gold at $120 is the gold version of Casio's slim dress watch, a good budget answer if you want gold on a bracelet. For women, the Lucky Fours Phila at $139.99 is a small rectangular dial on a thin gold bracelet with a vintage feel, a shape that looks completely at home with a summer dress. And for a daytime wedding where you are a guest rather than a groomsman, a Santos in Gold Pearl or Emerald has the right amount of color without competing with anyone's outfit. If you are buying for a whole wedding party, our groomsmen watches guide works through sets.

Dinner and evenings: a watch with a point of view

The last occasion is the one with the fewest rules: dinner, a night out, an evening where you want to wear something interesting. This is where a dress watch can be a conversation piece.

The Lucky Fours Etienne is the most unusual watch in this guide. Its gold tone case appears to melt across the wrist, an asymmetric shape that recalls surrealist painting, with Roman numerals on a white dial and a black leather strap. At $149.99 it is a dress watch in its materials and dial, and an art piece in its shape. It is not for the office, and it is not for black tie in a conservative crowd. At a dinner it will be the watch people ask about. Our guide to art watches explores the idea further.

What about gold, just above $200?

Seiko's Essentials range has a gold option just past this budget. The Seiko Essentials at $265 is a 30mm women's watch with a gold finished case and bracelet and a champagne dial, one of the most classic dress watches you can buy from an established maker at this level. If you want gold from a brand with a long history and can stretch past $200, it is the one to look at. Below $200, the Casio and the Lucky Fours Calista at $79.99 are the gold tone options.

Frequently Asked Questions

What watch should I wear to a black tie event?

Traditionally a small, slim watch on a black leather strap with a white or black dial, or no watch at all. A gold tone or steel dress watch under 40mm on black leather is the safe modern choice.

Can I wear a day date watch with a suit?

Yes. The day date dress sports watch on a five link bracelet has been worn with suits for decades. It sits on the sporty side of formal, so it suits business wear better than black tie.

Is Seiko a good dress watch brand?

Yes. Seiko's Essentials range offers slim quartz dress watches with sunray dials and mixed brushed and polished finishing, and its Presage line covers automatic dress watches higher up. Our Seiko buying guide has the details.

Gold or silver for a dress watch?

Match the watch to the other metals you wear, such as a wedding ring, cufflinks or a belt buckle. If you wear none, silver is the more versatile choice and gold the warmer one.
