The Best Gold Watches for Men

A gold watch is the boldest thing most men will ever wear, and the right one depends on how much gold you can carry. We sort the best gold tone watches by type, and explain what to expect from gold tone at this price.

Men tend to come to gold watches in one of two ways. Some have always wanted one and are looking for the right one; others have been told for years that gold is too much, and are quietly wondering whether it is. Both are right in a way. A full gold watch on a gold bracelet is one of the strongest things you can wear, and it needs the right person and the right occasions. But gold comes in degrees, and a gold case on a leather strap, or a gold watch with a dark dial, is far easier to wear than most men assume.

Every watch in this guide is gold tone, a gold coloured coating over stainless steel. That is how gold looks are made below several thousand dollars, and it is nothing to apologise for, as long as nobody describes it as solid gold.

Every watch this guide mentions, ranked by Value Score or by what one watch costs today with each store's current offer counted.

How much gold can you wear?

Think of gold watches on a scale. At one end, a gold case on a dark leather strap with a dark dial: the gold is a frame, and most people barely register it. In the middle, a gold watch on a gold bracelet with a black or green dial, where the dark centre calms the metal. At the far end, a gold watch with a gold or champagne dial on a gold bracelet, which is gold from edge to edge and reads as jewellery. The further along you go, the more the watch defines the outfit. If you are unsure, start in the middle.

The gold bracelet sports watch

A gold sports watch on a matching bracelet is the modern default, and two Lucky Fours models do it well at very different prices.

The Caspian in Gold is the least expensive serious gold watch we know of at $79.99. It takes the brand's best selling shape, a rounded octagon case with an integrated style bracelet and a ribbed dial, and renders it entirely in gold tone. The integrated bracelet suits gold because it reads as one continuous piece of metal rather than a head on a band, which is how expensive gold sports watches are designed too.

The Santos is the classic alternative: a round case with a fluted bezel, a five link bracelet and day and date windows, the look of the most famous gold dress sports watch of the last half century. It comes in 18 colourways, several of them gold, including plain Gold, Gold Noir with a black dial and Gold Pearl with a white one, at $129.99. Of the gold versions, Gold Noir is the one we would choose first, because the black dial makes the gold look deliberate rather than loud. Our guide to day date style watches covers this design in depth.

From an established brand, the Timex Q Continental 39mm Gold Tone at $199 is the easiest recommendation: a 39mm gold tone case and bracelet with a green textured dial and day and date windows. It is slimmer and plainer than the Lucky Fours watches and carries a name everyone knows.

The gold chronograph

The Prague from the side: an integrated style gold bracelet and a black panda dial

Gold chronographs are the sportiest way to wear gold, and the subdials break up the dial so the watch looks busy rather than shiny. The Lucky Fours Prague in Gold Noir has a gold tone case and integrated style bracelet with a black dial and white subdials, a reverse panda layout that keeps it readable, for $89.99. For a dressier gold chronograph, the Voyager puts a gold tone case and black dial on a brown croc pattern leather strap, at $79.99, which turns the volume down considerably. Our chronograph guide covers the steel versions of both.

Gold on leather: the quiet option

A gold case on leather is how many men's fathers and grandfathers wore gold, and it remains the most wearable form of the metal. The leather absorbs light, the case is the only gold on show and the whole watch looks dressier. Besides the Voyager, the most memorable gold on leather watch in the Lucky Fours range is the Etienne, a gold tone case with a melted, asymmetric shape, a white dial with Roman numerals and a black leather strap, at $149.99. It is less a gold watch than a piece of wearable art, and we cover it in our guide to art watches. For an established brand gold on leather, Timex sells several gold tone cases on leather straps in its Marlin and reissue lines at around $300.

Gold with a mechanism: automatic options

If you want gold and an automatic movement, the Lucky Fours Skeleton comes in Gold and Gold Noir colourways at $99.99, and the Spine in Gold Noir at $149.99; both show their movement through an open dial. From an established brand, the Seiko Presage Cocktail Time Gold at $575 is the gold automatic to aim for: a gold tone case and bracelet with a gloss gold and brown dial pressed with a pattern meant to suggest bubbles, over a Seiko automatic with a see through caseback. It is one of the most beautiful dials in this guide.

A note on the Tissot: the gold PRX is 35mm, smaller than most men's watches today. On a slim wrist, or for someone who likes a vintage size, it is lovely; on a larger wrist it can look like a borrowed watch. Check our size chart before ordering.

Living with gold tone

A few habits keep a gold tone watch looking right. Take it off before heavy work, since clasp edges and the underside of the bracelet wear first. Clean it with a soft cloth and, occasionally, warm soapy water and a soft brush, never with abrasive polish, which removes coating. And match your other metals: a gold watch with a gold belt buckle or ring looks intentional, while gold beside a steel ring and silver cufflinks looks accidental. If your other jewellery is steel or white gold, consider two tone instead, or the warmer and softer rose gold.

And if you want gold for evenings but steel for the office, the buy one, get one free offer at Lucky Fours makes that cheap: a Caspian in Gold and a Caspian in steel together cost $79.99.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are affordable gold watches real gold?

No. Watches at this price are gold tone: stainless steel with a gold coloured coating, usually applied by PVD or plating. Solid gold watches start in the thousands. Gold tone gives the look without the value of the metal.

Will a gold tone watch fade?

A good PVD coating is hard and lasts years of normal wear. Edges that rub against desks and clasps wear first, and deep scratches can show the steel underneath. Gentle cleaning and avoiding abrasives keeps it bright.

What skin tone suits a gold watch?

Yellow gold flatters warm and olive skin especially well, while cooler skin can lean toward rose gold or two tone. In practice, confidence matters more: most men can wear a gold watch with a dark dial.

Should a gold watch be on a bracelet or a strap?

A gold bracelet is the full statement. A gold case on brown or black leather is far quieter and easier to wear to work. See our guide to bracelet vs strap.
