Groomsmen Watches: The Best Sets for Every Wedding Budget

A matching watch is one of the few groomsmen gifts that gets worn after the wedding. Here is what a full set costs at every level, how a two for one offer changes the arithmetic, and which watch fits which kind of wedding.

One look, many wrists

Groomsmen gifts have a short life expectancy. The engraved flask goes into a drawer, the novelty socks are gone by spring, and the whiskey is drunk by the end of the honeymoon. A watch is different. It is worn on the day, it shows up in every photo of the wedding party's hands on lapels and glasses, and if it is chosen well it stays on the wrist long after the suits have gone back to the rental shop. That is why groomsmen watches have become one of the most searched wedding gifts, and why the questions people ask are so specific: how much does a set of six cost, what happens when there are seven, and do they all have to be the same?

This guide answers those questions with real prices. The short version: a matching set used to mean multiplying one price by the number of men in the line, which made anything decent expensive quickly. Buy one, get one free offers have changed that arithmetic, and so has the number of good looking steel watches under $100.

What does a set of groomsmen watches cost?

Start with the number of men and multiply. That simple step is where most budgets go wrong, because a watch that feels reasonable as a single gift becomes a large number at six or eight. A Seiko 5 Sports is a fine automatic and a sensible present for one person; as a set of six it is a $2,100 line item, which is more than many couples spend on flowers. At the other end, a set of eight Casio dress watches costs about the same as two nights in the wedding hotel.

Two things stand out. The first is how quickly a mid priced watch turns into a four figure set. The second is that the cheapest watch per piece, the Casio, is not the cheapest set once a two for one offer enters the picture. Per groomsman, a Caspian set works out to about $40 a watch.

How buy one, get one free changes the maths

A two for one offer rewards even numbers. Six groomsmen means three paid watches; eight means four. The awkward case is the odd number. Five men still means three paid watches, because the sixth watch is free whether you take it or not, and seven means four paid watches for eight pieces. In practice the spare goes to the groom, the father of the bride or the friend who did the readings, so an odd party is less of a problem than it first looks.

Mix and match matters more than it sounds. It means the paired watches do not have to be the same model or the same color, so you can put a $129.99 Santos for the best man in the same order as a set of Caspians for everyone else. How the store prices a mixed pair, and whether the free watch is the lower priced one, is set out in its terms, so read them before you plan around a particular combination. Our explainer on how buy one, get one free watch offers work goes through the common rules.

The watches we would choose for a wedding party

A groomsmen watch has a harder brief than a personal one. It has to suit six different men of different ages and tastes, look right with a suit on the day and still be wearable with a tee on a Tuesday. That rules out anything loud, anything oversized and anything fragile looking. Steel on a steel bracelet is the safest material because it suits every skin tone and every suit color, and it means there is no strap to wear out.

For most weddings we would start with the Lucky Fours Caspian. It is a steel sports watch with an integrated bracelet that flows out of a rounded octagon case, with a horizontally ribbed dial and a date window. The shape is the one people associate with the expensive steel sports watches of the 1970s, which is exactly the point of a gift: it looks like more than it costs. It comes in 6 colorways, the Caspian is the brand's best seller, and at $79.99 with buy one, get one free it is the least expensive good looking set in this guide.

If the wedding is formal, the Caspian's sporty shape can look slightly off under a dinner jacket. The Lucky Fours Nassau is the dress alternative: a classic round case, a white dial with Roman numerals and a fine steel bracelet with many small links that sits flat against the wrist. It is the watch that goes with a bow tie. It also comes in two tone versions with gold accents, which suit a wedding with warm metallic details in the decor. At $79.99 the set maths is identical to the Caspian.

For a bigger budget, the Lucky Fours Santos at $129.99 is a day date style watch with a fluted bezel and a five link bracelet, the most recognizable dress sports design of the last half century. It has the widest color choice in the range at 18 colorways, which is useful when the party wants to match a wedding palette precisely. With the offer, a set of six works out to about $65 a watch.

Matching the watch to the wedding

The wedding sets the dress code, and the dress code should pick the watch. A useful rule: the more formal the event, the thinner and plainer the watch should be.

Black tie or evening ceremony

A slim round watch with a white or silver dial, on a fine bracelet. The Nassau is the obvious choice at this price, and the Casio MTP1302D Dress Watch at $89.95 is a sound alternative from an established brand, with a black sunburst dial and a plain steel bracelet. Avoid chronographs here; three subdials under a dinner jacket cuff look busy.

Daytime church or city hall

A suit and tie in daylight is the setting where the Caspian and the Santos look best. Choose one dial color for everyone if the suits are identical, or let each groomsman choose if the suits vary. Blue and green dials photograph well against navy and gray suits; white and silver dials disappear into a white shirt cuff.

Outdoor, barn or summer garden wedding

Lighter suits, rolled sleeves and an evening that ends with jackets off. This is where a dial color can carry the wedding palette. The Caspian in Emerald or the Lucky Fours Fortuno with its teal sunray dial suit sage and green schemes, and both are $79.99 or less.

Destination or beach wedding

Keep it simple and practical. A dive style watch such as the Lucky Fours Baretta, with a green rotating bezel and steel bracelet, has the right holiday look. Treat it as a style choice only; if the groomsmen plan to swim in their watches, buy a watch with a stated rating from its maker and read the specification first.

One look, different dials

Mix and match solves an old groomsmen gift problem: one size of shirt fits nobody, and one color of dial suits only some men. The approach that works best in photos is a single model with each man choosing his own dial. Six Caspians in Emerald, Ocean, Noir, Pearl and Gold still read as a set because the case and bracelet are identical, but each man ends up with the color he would have picked for himself, which makes it far more likely he wears it again.

The alternative is to give the groomsmen one model and the best man another, so the hierarchy of the wedding party is visible without being heavy handed. We cover that in our best man gift ideas, including a few automatic watches worth the step up.

When an established brand is the better buy

A watch from a brand with a long history has advantages a direct to consumer watch cannot match: the name on the dial, service centers, and in some cases a mechanical movement with a long track record. If those things matter to the groom, the right answer may be fewer, better watches.

Our broader list of groomsmen gift ideas covers what to give when a watch is not the right fit at all.

Sizes, timing and returns

Steel bracelets are delivered long so they fit large wrists, and a jeweler removes links for smaller ones. That means somebody has to collect wrist sizes, and somebody has to get six bracelets adjusted before the day. Do it at the rehearsal dinner and you will have a queue of men with loose watches sliding over their knuckles. Our guide to buying a set of 4, 6 or 8 has a simple way to collect measurements without spoiling the surprise and a timeline that works backwards from the wedding date.

Two practical points before you order. Check the store's current shipping times rather than assuming them, and read its return terms, because offer orders are sometimes refunded differently from single purchases. Lucky Fours accepts returns within 30 days, see the store terms, and its watches carry a 12 month warranty.

Final thoughts

A groomsmen watch works when it looks good in the photos and still looks right a year later. For most wedding parties that means a steel watch, one model, and a dial color each man would have chosen anyway. The Caspian is the set we would point most couples to first, because the two for one maths brings six watches down to the price of three. For a formal wedding, the Nassau does the same job in a dress watch shape, and if the groom wants an established name, the Timex Q Continental is the honest choice at about four times the cost per man.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much should you spend on a groomsmen gift?

Most couples set a figure per person rather than a total. For watches, $40 to $100 per groomsman covers a steel watch from a direct to consumer brand, and $150 to $350 per person buys a set from Timex, Casio or Seiko. With buy one, get one free, six Lucky Fours Caspians cost three paid watches, about $240 in total at $79.99 each.

Should all the groomsmen get the same watch?

Not necessarily. The cleanest look is one model in one dial color, but giving each man the same model in a dial he picked keeps the photos coordinated and the gift personal. Mix and match also lets you put different models in one order.

When should you order groomsmen watches?

Early enough to collect wrist sizes, size every bracelet and still have time for a return or exchange. Check the store's current shipping times and its return window before you set a date. Our set logistics guide has a week by week timeline.

Do groomsmen watches need to be resized?

Almost always. Steel bracelets ship long so they fit large wrists, and links are removed to fit smaller ones. A jeweler does it in minutes, or you can do it at home with a pin pusher, as shown in our bracelet guide.
