Buying Watches for Groomsmen: Sets of 4, 6 and 8

The logistics of a groomsmen watch set, worked out in advance: the order arithmetic for every party size, a way to get wrist measurements without asking, and a timeline that leaves room for something to go wrong.

Six watches are not one watch multiplied by six. They are six wrists, six bracelet adjustments, six opinions about dial color and one delivery that has to arrive before a date that cannot move. Most of the work in giving groomsmen watches is logistics, and almost none of it is difficult if it is planned backwards from the wedding. This page is the planning sheet: the arithmetic for each party size, a quiet way to collect measurements, and the order of operations that keeps a loose bracelet off the altar.

If you have not chosen the watch yet, start with our groomsmen watches guide, which compares models and prices by wedding style. Everything below assumes the choice is made.

Pick how many watches you need and which designs, and see the total with the current offer applied.

How many watches do you actually pay for?

With buy one, get one free and mix and match, every pair costs one watch. That turns the order into a simple rule: divide the number of watches by two and round up. The table shows what that means for every common party size, using the $79.99 Oceanus as the example. A set of six Caspians, the brand's best seller, works the same way: three paid watches at $79.99 each.

The odd sizes are the interesting rows. Five groomsmen cost the same as six, and seven cost the same as eight, so the spare is free. Couples use it in three ways: the groom wears the same watch as his party, the spare goes to a father or an usher, or it stays boxed as a replacement if one groomsman loses his before the wedding. That last use sounds pessimistic until you have seen a bachelor party weekend.

What a mixed order costs

Mix and match means the pairs do not have to match. A common order is a set for the groomsmen and a slightly better watch for the best man. If the party is five groomsmen on the Oceanus plus a best man on the $129.99 Santos, that is six watches and three pairs. How a mixed pair is priced, and which watch counts as the free one, is set out in the store's offer terms; with most offers of this kind the lower priced watch in each pair is the free one, so put the most expensive watches in different pairs rather than together. Read the current terms before you build the basket.

Collecting wrist sizes without spoiling the surprise

A steel bracelet is delivered at full length and shortened by removing links. To get it right first time, you need each man's wrist circumference. There are four ways to get it, from most to least reliable:

  1. The suit fitting. If the party is being fitted for suits, ask the tailor to note the wrist measurement alongside the sleeve length. Nobody questions an extra number at a fitting.
  2. A photo of an existing watch. Ask, casually, for a photo of the watch he already wears laid flat next to a ruler. Measure the inside length of the closed bracelet or strap.
  3. A partner or roommate. A piece of string around the wrist while he sleeps is a time honored method and it works.
  4. Ask outright. Many grooms simply tell the party a watch is coming. The surprise is in the watch itself, and you lose nothing.

Record the measurement in inches, then add a little for comfort: a watch should slide about a finger's width but not slip over the wrist bone. Our wrist size chart shows how case size and wrist size relate, which matters if one groomsman has a much smaller or larger wrist than the rest.

Sizing six bracelets

A local jeweler will remove links for a small fee, often while you wait. Bring the list of measurements, one watch per man, and a stack of small zip bags. Each man's removed links go into his own bag with his name on it. Those links are the only way to make the bracelet bigger later, and once six sets of identical links are mixed together nobody will know whose are whose.

If you would rather do it yourself, a pin pusher costs a few dollars and the job takes about ten minutes per watch once you have done the first one. Remove links evenly from both sides of the clasp so the clasp sits under the wrist. Our guide to adjusting a watch bracelet at home walks through it step by step.

One practical choice makes sizing easier: buy the same model for everyone. Identical bracelets mean one technique, one tool and one set of instructions. The Oceanus is a good example, a steel watch with an integrated bracelet, an octagonal bezel with visible screws and a blue checkered dial, at $79.99 in 11 colorways.

A timeline that works backwards from the wedding

The single biggest mistake is ordering late. Shipping times vary by store and by season, and a set of watches is not something to chase on the Thursday before a Saturday wedding. Check the store's current shipping times before you commit to a date, then use this outline.

WhenTask
10 to 12 weeks outChoose the model, confirm the head count, collect wrist measurements
8 weeks outRead the store's shipping and return terms, place the order
On deliveryOpen every box, check every watch runs and the dial is clean, note any problem the same day
4 to 6 weeks outSize every bracelet, bag and label the removed links
2 to 3 weeks outGive the watches, at a dinner or the bachelor party, so any fit problem can still be fixed
Wedding dayBring the spare and a pin pusher

Giving the watches before the day, rather than on the morning, is the step most people skip. It costs nothing, it means each man can wear the watch for a week and report a pinch or a slide, and it keeps the morning of the wedding for buttonholes and nerves.

Returns, exchanges and the one watch that is wrong

With six or eight watches, the odds that one is the wrong size, the wrong color for its owner or simply not to his taste are real. Before ordering, read three things in the store's terms: how many days you have to return, what condition the watch must be in, and how an order placed under a two for one offer is refunded. That last point matters, because returning one watch from a discounted pair is usually not refunded at the full single price. Lucky Fours accepts returns within 30 days, see the store terms, and each watch has a 12 month warranty. Plan the handover so the 30 days have not run out by the time the groomsmen open their boxes.

A sized bracelet is generally harder to return than an unworn one, which is another reason to check every watch on arrival before any links come out.

When a heritage brand set makes more sense

If the groom wants a name with decades of history on every dial, a set from an established maker costs more but removes the question entirely. The Timex Q Continental 39mm at $179 is the most practical: a 39mm steel quartz watch with a day and date, sold through department stores and online, so a replacement is easy to find. The Casio MTP1302D Dress Watch at $89.95 is cheaper per watch and very plain. At list price, a set from either is a straight multiplication. The Lucky Fours Brone, with its all black finish and rounded octagon case, is the opposite approach: a bolder look, at $79.99, for a party that would rather match the black suits than the history.

When the watches are bought and sized, the remaining question is how to hand them over. Our guide to giving a watch as a gift covers presentation, the receipt and what to say about returns, and our best man gift ideas cover the one watch that should be a little different.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a groomsmen watch set of 6 or set of 7?

Most brands do not sell boxed sets; you buy the watches individually. With a buy one, get one free offer, a set of 6 means three paid watches and a set of 7 means four paid watches, with an eighth watch spare.

How do I find out my groomsmen's wrist sizes without asking?

Ask each man to send a photo of his own watch next to a ruler, or borrow a watch he wears often and count its links. If neither works, simply ask for a wrist measurement in inches as part of the suit fitting, when nobody will think twice about it.

Can a jeweler resize a bracelet on the day?

Usually, but it is a risk you do not need. Size every bracelet at least a week before the wedding and keep the removed links in a labeled bag for each man.

What if one groomsman does not like his watch?

Check the store's return and exchange terms before you order, since offer orders can be handled differently. Lucky Fours accepts returns within 30 days, see the store terms, so plan the handover early enough to use that window.
