A mechanical watch for under $200 used to mean a gamble. Now there are several sound choices, almost all from online brands. Here is how to judge them, the four we would buy, and the case for saving up for a Seiko instead.

An automatic watch has no battery. A weighted rotor inside spins as your wrist moves, winding a spring that releases its energy through a chain of gears at a steady beat. That is the entire appeal: a small machine that runs on you. It is less accurate than quartz and needs more care, and nobody buys one for practical reasons. Under $200, the question is not whether an automatic will be better than a quartz watch, because it will not, but whether it will be good enough to enjoy. The big Japanese and American brands have left this price; Seiko's cheapest automatic in the US starts above $300 and Timex's at $299. So this guide is mostly about online brands, and about how to tell a good one from a poor one.

Product pages for cheap automatics often say little about the movement. These are the questions worth answering before you click buy.
If you want the mechanics behind these questions, how automatic watches work covers rotors, mainsprings and power reserve in plain English.
We have ordered these by price, because in this bracket each step up buys something specific.
The cheapest serious automatic we know of. The Skeleton is a round steel case on a steel bracelet with a blue dial cut away to reveal the movement, so the movement is visible without turning the watch over. Round cases are the most traditional shape for a skeleton dial, and this one would not look out of place next to a dress shirt. There are 7 colorways, including gold tone and two tone versions.

Fifty dollars more buys a more modern design. The Spine puts its open dial inside a steel octagonal case with an integrated style bracelet, the shape of the 1970s luxury sports watch, so it reads as a sports watch first and a mechanical curiosity second. The Gold Noir version with a black case and gold tone movement is the most dramatic.
Same price, different temperament. The Prince Oak wears its automatic in a black octagonal case on a rubber strap, with the gold tone movement glowing through the open dial. It is lighter than a bracelet watch and suits the gym, the beach and black clothes. The rose gold version on a white strap is striking if you want something less stealthy.

The Demon sits exactly on the $200 line, so it only just belongs here. It is the one automatic in this guide with a closed dial: a rugged tool diver style case on a steel bracelet with a bold colored dial, turquoise in the lead photo, and yellow, orange, red, blue and black alternatives. If you want a mechanical watch that looks like equipment rather than jewelry, this is it. As with any dive style watch from a fashion led brand, treat it as a style, not a diving instrument.

For some buyers, yes. The Seiko 5 Sports Black and Gold costs $315 and uses Seiko's own 4R36 movement, which has been made in huge numbers for many years, can be wound by hand, and is understood by every watchmaker. Seiko lists a power reserve of about 41 hours, a day and date and a see through case back. If you want a mechanical watch you can keep for twenty years and have serviced anywhere, that history is worth the extra money. The Timex Marlin Automatic is the American alternative at $299, a 1960s design with a 21 jewel movement on leather.
For other buyers, no. If what draws you to automatics is seeing the movement, none of those established options shows it through the dial, and the Lucky Fours watches cost half as much or less. Buy one, get one free with mix and match also means a Spine and a Prince Oak together cost $149.99, two automatics for under half the price of one Seiko. We weigh the Seiko 5 against the alternatives in more depth in Seiko 5 Sports: is it worth it, and the next price bracket is covered in the best automatic watches under $500.

A well assembled automatic at this price runs for years, but it will be less accurate than quartz, gaining or losing several seconds a day, and it benefits from a service after some years. Buy from a seller with a clear warranty; Lucky Fours gives 12 months.
Usually a day or two, depending on the movement's power reserve. If it stops, wind it through the crown if the movement allows hand winding, or give it a few gentle shakes, then set the time. How automatic watches work explains why.
On Seiko's US site the Seiko 5 Sports range starts at $315 for the Seiko 5 Sports Black and Gold. There is no Seiko automatic under $200 in the current US catalog.
No. Some skeleton look watches are quartz with a decorated dial. We explain how to tell in skeleton watches: automatic or quartz.
