Seiko 5 Sports: Is It Worth It, and What Else to Consider

The Seiko 5 Sports is still the default first automatic. We look at what it does well, where it has slipped as prices rose, and which watches deserve a look at the same money, for less, and for a little more.

Ask a group of watch enthusiasts for a first automatic and someone will say Seiko 5 before the question is finished. The recommendation has been the same for decades, because the formula has barely changed: a mechanical movement Seiko makes itself, a day and date, a steel case, and a price below almost every other established brand. What has changed is that price. The in stock men's models on Seiko's US store now run from $315 to $415, and at that money the 5 has more competition than it used to. So is it still worth buying, and what else should you look at before you do?

Is the Seiko 5 Sports worth it?

Yes, for the right buyer. Here is what the money gets you, read from Seiko's own listings:

The case against it is mostly about value drift. The 4R36 is built to be tough rather than precise, and Seiko's own tolerance for it is several times looser than you would expect from a quartz watch. The bracelets on the less expensive models feel light. And at $350, the 5 now sits where buyers can also consider an automatic from Timex or Caravelle, or two watches from an online brand. None of that makes it a bad watch. It means the 5 is no longer the only sensible answer.

What else can you buy for the same money?

Two automatics from American brands sit right beside the 5 Sports on price. The Caravelle Sea Hunter Automatic at $316 is the closest like for like: a 39mm 316L steel case, a black dial with a date, a rotating 60 minute timing bezel and a 21 jewel automatic with a 42 hour reserve, sold through Bulova's US site. If you liked the look of the SKX mid size Seiko, it is worth comparing directly. The Timex Marlin Automatic 40mm at $299 goes the other way, toward a 1960s dress watch on leather, with a 21 jewel automatic and a 40mm case.

Seiko's own catalog has an alternative too. The Seiko Essentials Automatic costs the same as the cheapest 5 Sports, $315, and puts a hand windable automatic behind a plain blue sunray dial with a date only. It is the better pick if you want a mechanical Seiko that reads as a dress watch rather than a sports watch.

What can you buy for less?

This is where the online brands come in. Lucky Fours sells five automatics below the price of the cheapest 5 Sports, and they make sense if you want the experience of a mechanical watch and a strong design, and can accept a younger brand without Seiko's service history.

The closest in spirit is the Lucky Fours N948 at $250, an automatic dive style watch with a black dial, gold accents and a steel bracelet. Like the Seiko 5, it is a diver to look at rather than to dive with; we explain why that matters in dive style watches explained. The store also shows it on a black rubber strap and on a fabric strap.

The Demon at $200 is a chunkier automatic tool diver with a turquoise dial and a rugged case, for someone who wants more color than Seiko offers. The Spine at $149.99 takes a different direction: a steel octagonal case and an open skeleton dial that shows the automatic movement working. And the Skeleton at $99.99 is the cheapest automatic in the catalog, with a round case and a blue open dial.

The buy one, get one free offer changes the maths here. Pairing the Spine with a quartz watch from the same catalog costs $149.99 under the current offer, so for less than half the price of a 5 Sports you have an automatic for weekends and a battery watch for the office. Check the store terms for how the offer applies to mixed pairs. Our list of the best automatic watches under $200 covers this budget in more detail.

What if you can spend a little more?

Above $350, the next step is an automatic with a more finished case and bracelet. The Citizen Tsuyosa 40mm at $396 on Citizen's US site has a 40mm steel case with an integrated bracelet and Citizen's own automatic caliber, and it comes in a 37mm version, the Citizen Tsuyosa 37mm, at the same price. Seiko's Presage line starts around $550. See the best automatic watches under $500 for the full field.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much is a Seiko 5 Sports?

On Seiko's US store in October 2026, in stock men's models ranged from $315 for the Seiko 5 Sports Black and Gold to $415 for the Seiko 5 Sports SNXS Inspired, with most around $350.

What movement is in the Seiko 5 Sports?

The men's models use Seiko's 4R36 automatic caliber, which can also be wound by hand, shows the day and date, and has a power reserve of about 41 hours according to Seiko. The smaller 28mm class models use the 2R06.

Is the Seiko 5 Sports a real dive watch?

Seiko describes the 5 Sports as a sports watch with a rotating bezel, not as a diver built to a diving standard. For actual scuba use, Seiko's own Prospex divers are the watches to look at, and our guide to dive watches under $500 compares them.

What is a cheaper alternative to the Seiko 5?

For an automatic, the Lucky Fours Spine at $149.99 and the Demon at $200 both cost less. For a quartz watch with a similar look, see our Seiko alternatives under $100.
