There are two ways to wear a day date: the classic fluted bezel with the day spelled out at twelve, or a modern minimal case with day and date side by side at three. We explain both and pick the best of each under $150.

The day date is the most practical complication there is. Most people check the date more often than they would ever use a chronograph, and seeing the day spelled out saves a glance at the phone more often than you would expect. It also happens to be one of the most prestigious layouts in watchmaking. The best known day date was introduced in 1956, has only ever been made in precious metal, and sits today in the gold dress watch bracket, from about $17,500.
That prestige belongs to one specific design. The day date function itself is everywhere, in two broad styles. This guide covers both and names the watches under $150 that do each one best.

The classic layout spells out the full day of the week in an arched window just below twelve o'clock and shows the date at three, usually under a small magnifying lens set into the crystal. It comes with a fluted bezel, a ridged ring that catches light like a coin's edge, and a five link bracelet with polished center links. This is the dress watch version: formal, recognizable and quite large in presence even when the case is not.
The modern layout puts an abbreviated day and the date together in a single wider window at three. The case is usually simpler, with a smooth bezel and an integrated or sport bracelet. It reads as a practical everyday watch rather than a statement, and it is where most affordable day date watches from established brands sit.
Neither is better. The classic suits a suit and an occasion; the modern suits everything else. Many people who own one eventually want the other.
The Lucky Fours Santos follows the classic layout closely. The day is spelled in full in an arched window under twelve, the date sits at three under a magnifier, the bezel is finely fluted and the bracelet has five links with polished centers. The red dial in the store photographs has a sunray finish with Roman numerals, and there are 18 colorways in total, among them green, blue, purple, black and several steel and gold combinations. It is $129.99.

The Lucky Fours Arabic Santos is the same design with Eastern Arabic numerals on a light blue dial, in 3 colorways. It is a distinctive variation that keeps everything recognizable about the classic while making it personal. It costs $149.99. Our guide to Arabic numeral watches has more on the style.
Which colorway? For a first classic day date, we would choose a deep dial, green, blue or black, on steel. The two tone and gold versions are the most faithful to the original, which has only ever been made in gold or platinum, but they are also the most conspicuous. If you are buying two under the buy one, get one free offer, a steel one and a gold one cover every occasion.
The Lucky Fours Fortuno is our pick for the modern style. It has a minimal steel case with a smooth bezel, an integrated style bracelet and a teal sunray dial with the day and date together at three. The markers are long and slim, which keeps the dial calm. It is $79.99 in 5 colorways.
The Lucky Fours Jaxon is its close sibling, with a textured turquoise dial rather than a sunray. The texture makes the bright color look richer, and it is one of the most popular dial colors of recent years. It is also $79.99.
From an established brand, the Timex Q Continental 39mm at $179 is the one to know. It is a 39mm steel watch with an integrated bracelet and a day and date window, inspired by 1970s design. There is also a Timex Q Continental 39mm Gold Tone with a green dial at $199, which is a rare example of an affordable gold day date that looks right.

Two practical points. First, a quartz day date needs resetting at the end of every month with fewer than 31 days, and the day and date are usually changed separately; our guide on setting a day date watch explains the order. Second, the classic layout's five link bracelet has many small links, which makes it comfortable but means sizing it takes a few more pins than a sports bracelet. Do it once properly and it will sit well for years. For the bigger picture of classic designs and what they cost at the top, see seven luxury watch looks for less.

A watch that shows both the day of the week and the date of the month, either in two separate windows or one combined window. Our explainer on how the day date complication works covers the mechanism.
Usually by pulling the crown to the first position and turning it one way for the date and the other way for the day, though this varies by movement. Avoid changing the date between about 9pm and 3am on many watches. See how to set a day date watch.
The classic version with a fluted bezel and five link bracelet is one of the most formal steel or gold watches there is. The minimal version with a combined window at three is more casual and suits business casual and weekends.
The Lucky Fours Fortuno and Jaxon at $79.99 are the least expensive in this guide. From an established brand, the Timex Q Continental 39mm at $179.
