Gold Watches That Look Expensive (and the Ones That Do Not)

Gold is the fastest way for a watch to look expensive and the fastest way for it to look cheap. The difference comes down to tone, contrast and finish, all of which you can judge from a listing before you buy.

The Lucky Fours Prague: a black dial is what keeps an all gold watch from looking like costume jewelry

A gold watch tells people it was a deliberate choice. That is its appeal, and its risk. A steel watch that is slightly off in its proportions goes unnoticed; a gold one that is slightly off in its color looks like a costume piece from across the room. At the top of the market, gold watches start at about $17,500 for a dress model, and what that money buys, besides the metal, is a color that looks right in every light. Under $200 you are buying gold tone, a coating over steel, and the question is whether the maker chose and applied it well.

This guide is about how to tell. It starts with what goes wrong, because the failures are more consistent than the successes, and then names the watches that avoid them.

Why gold watches look brassy

When a gold watch looks cheap, it is almost always for one of five reasons.

What makes gold look rich

Reverse the list and you have the recipe. A warm, even tone across case and bracelet. A mix of finishes. A dark or champagne dial that frames the gold rather than competing with it. A moderate size. And, less visibly, a coating over stainless steel rather than base metal, so that wear, when it comes, reveals steel rather than grey alloy. All the Lucky Fours watches below are built on 316L stainless steel.

There are also two shortcuts. Rose gold tone hides small variations better than yellow, because its pinker color is less exacting. And two tone, gold with steel, gives you the warmth of gold with only a fraction of the surface area to get right. Both are covered in our guides to rose gold watches for men and two tone watches.

Gold watches that look expensive

Lucky Fours Prague: all gold, done properly

The Prague is a gold tone chronograph on an integrated bracelet, and it is a useful test of the rules above. The case and bracelet are one continuous gold shape, and the dial is black with white subdials, the panda layout in reverse. That black dial is why the watch works: it breaks up the gold and gives the eye something to read. It is $89.99 with 7 colorways, including steel and two tone versions if all gold is too much.

Lucky Fours Voyager: gold on leather

Gold on a leather strap is the most forgiving format of all, because there is no bracelet to match. The Voyager is a gold tone chronograph with a black dial on a brown croc pattern leather strap, a dress chronograph that suits a jacket and tie. Brown and gold are a natural pair. It is $79.99.

Lucky Fours Caspian in Gold: the integrated shape in gold

The Caspian is best known in steel with a green dial, but its Gold colorway puts the rounded octagonal case and integrated bracelet entirely in gold tone. The horizontal ribbing on the dial gives the surface the texture that keeps it from looking flat. At $79.99 it is the least expensive way to try an all gold watch.

Lucky Fours Maso: gold for a small wrist

The Maso shows how well gold works at a small scale: a small oval gold tone dial on a gold mesh bracelet. Mesh catches light evenly and hides the joins that make link bracelets hard to match. It is $89.99, and our guide to gold watches for women has more in this size.

Gold watches that do not look expensive

To be fair to the category, here is what to skip, in any brand. Large, all gold chronographs with gold dials and many subdials, where the only contrast is the hands. Gold tone watches covered in stones on the dial, bezel and bracelet at once. Yellow gold with a bright blue or red dial, which reads as a novelty. And any watch where the listing does not say what the case is made of under the coating. If it is not stainless steel, the brand would usually say so if it could.

The Lucky Fours range has gold models that are deliberately bold, such as the Viceroy, a large rectangular gold tone case with both analog and digital displays. It is a fun watch, but it is a statement rather than something that reads as expensive, and we would not choose it for that purpose.

Established brand gold watches

The Timex Q Continental 39mm Gold Tone at $199 is the best example we know of an affordable gold watch that follows the rules: a 39mm gold tone case and integrated bracelet with a green dial, which is the dial color that suits yellow gold best. For women, the Seiko Essentials at $265 has a 30mm gold finish case with a champagne dial, and the Tissot PRX 35mm at $575 brings a Swiss name and a golden coating to the integrated bracelet shape.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a gold tone watch real gold?

No. Gold tone means a steel or base metal case with a gold colored coating. Solid gold watches start in the thousands of dollars. Every watch in this guide is gold tone, and we never describe them as gold.

Will a gold tone watch fade?

Coatings wear at the points that rub most, usually the clasp and the edges of the bracelet. A coating over stainless steel wears more gracefully than one over base metal, because what shows through is steel rather than a dull grey alloy. Keep it away from perfume and wipe it after wearing.

Does a gold watch go with silver jewelry?

It can, but it is easier to match. If you wear both metals, a two tone watch bridges them. See our guide to two tone watches.

Which dial color looks best with a gold watch?

Black, deep green and champagne are the safest. White can work on a small dress watch. Avoid bright blue on yellow gold, which tends to look loud rather than rich.
