Women's Watches
Almost every affordable gold watch is gold tone, and the good ones are easy to tell from the brassy ones once you know where to look. Here is how to judge the colour and the finish, and the gold watches we would buy at each budget.

A gold watch says more than a steel one. It is jewellery before it is an instrument, and it makes the rest of an outfit look considered. That is also why a bad one is so noticeable: gold tone that is too yellow, too shiny or too thin looks like costume jewellery from across a room, in a way a cheap steel watch never does. This guide covers how to tell the difference and which gold watches get it right.

A solid gold watch is a precious metal object, and at the top of the market a gold dress watch costs from about $17,500. Below that, every gold watch you can buy is a base metal, usually stainless steel or brass, with a gold coloured surface. The terms on product pages vary. Gold plated means a layer of gold applied by electroplating. PVD is a vapour deposited coating, often harder wearing. Gold tone is the broadest term and says only that the watch is gold in colour.
For practical purposes, what matters is less the process than the colour and how evenly it is applied. A good finish is a soft, slightly warm yellow, consistent across the case and every link of the bracelet. A poor one is either lemony and flat or so polished it looks orange under indoor light.
The rectangular watch with a white dial and Roman numerals is the gold watch most people picture, and the Lucky Fours Calista at $79.99 is a faithful version of it. The case is gold tone, the dial white with a railway minute track, and the bracelet a matching gold tone link. It passes most of the tests above, and it is the gold watch we would recommend to someone buying their first. For a rounder alternative from an established brand, the Seiko Essentials at $265 is a 30mm gold tone steel watch with a champagne dial, and very well made.
Gold watches have taken a turn toward the 1980s, with chunky, sculptural bracelets where the watch head is almost incidental. The Lora at $89.99 is the clearest example in the Lucky Fours range: a small oval dial on a bracelet of large open round links, polished on the faces, which catch light as the wrist moves. It is a watch to wear on its own or with a single plain bangle, and it looks best with simple clothes, a white shirt or black knit.

The Milo at $149.99 is the square counterpart, a small square gold dial on a broad gold link bracelet, with the same 1970s confidence. Both are compared with other link styles in bracelet watches for women.
The Surmen at $89.99 puts a tiny round white dial between links shaped like small gold flowers. It is the most ornate gold watch in this guide and not one for the office, but as a gift or a wedding guest watch it has more charm than anything plain at three times the price. It works best on its own, without other bracelets competing with the links.

A gold dial in a gold case is the boldest version of the look, and the established brands do it particularly well. The Timex Legacy Mini 25mm at $179 is a 25mm gold tone case with a gold sunray dial and gold tone bracelet; the sunray finish is what keeps it from looking flat. The Q Timex Continental Mini 24mm at $209 does the same with a textured champagne dial. At the top of this guide's range, the Tissot PRX 35mm at $575 is a 35mm integrated bracelet watch with a champagne dial and a gold coloured PVD case and bracelet, the sporty version of gold on gold and the best finished watch here.
If you wear mostly silver jewellery, or want a watch that works with both metals, all gold may be the wrong answer. The Lucky Fours Thea and Venoria both come on two tone bracelets that mix gold tone with steel, and our guide to two tone watches for women covers them. If you want a gold watch that looks rich rather than loud, the principles in women's watches that look expensive apply even more strongly to gold.

No. Gold tone describes the colour, applied as a plating or a PVD coating over steel or brass. Solid gold watches start in the thousands of dollars.
A good gold tone finish keeps its colour for years. What wears first is the edge of the clasp and the underside of the bracelet, which rub against desks and skin. PVD coatings are generally more durable than thin plating.
Yellow gold goes with more of what most people already own, especially warm colours, camel and black. Rose gold is softer and suits pale pinks, greys and navy. If you wear both, a two tone watch bridges them; see two tone watches for women.
It helps if they are the same family of colour, yellow with yellow, but they do not need to match exactly. A close tone looks deliberate; a near miss can look accidental, so when in doubt go for contrast instead.
