A two tone watch solves the problem of mixing metals, and it does it better than any single colour watch can. The details of how the gold is placed decide whether it looks classic or busy.

Two tone watches have a reputation problem that dates from the late 1980s, when they were everywhere, usually large, often fussy, sometimes with a gold bezel, gold crown, gold links and gold numerals all competing at once. They then spent about twenty years as the watch nobody wanted. What brought them back is the way people now wear jewellery: mixed. Gold rings with silver earrings, a steel watch beside gold bangles. A two tone watch is the piece that makes that look intentional rather than accidental.

Not all two tone watches mix their metals the same way, and the layout changes the character of the watch more than the colours do.
The test of a good two tone watch is that the gold has a pattern. Gold on the bezel, the centre links and the crown, and nowhere else, reads as one idea. Gold scattered on the hands, numerals and a few random links reads as several.
The Thea at $79.99 follows the classic pattern faithfully. A round case with a gold tone frame, a dial with Roman numerals at the quarters and a date window, and a bracelet with gold tone centre links between steel outer links. The two tone versions come with white, black and deep blue dials. The white is the most traditional; the blue is our favourite, because deep blue sits beautifully between gold and steel and makes a conservative watch feel current. The Thea is plain enough for a desk and polished enough for dinner, which is what an everyday two tone watch should be.

The Venoria, also $79.99, adds the one element that turns a two tone watch into an evening watch: a gold tone bezel set with a ring of small clear stones around a white dial. The bracelet uses the same centre link pattern as the Thea, in yellow gold or rose gold tone. The stones and the gold together are a lot of shine, so the Venoria is best with plain clothes, a black dress or a white shirt, and without too many other bracelets. It is also the watch to buy if you want one piece that works for work and occasions without changing.

The Venoria is listed in both, and the Thea's product photographs show both shades too, so check the colourway names on the product page. It is worth deciding before ordering. Yellow gold and steel is the classic combination: it reads as traditional, goes with camel, black, white and denim, and matches the gold jewellery most people own. Rose gold and steel is softer and slightly more modern. It suits pale skin and cool colours especially, blush, grey, lilac and navy, and it blends more easily with silver because the pink cast is closer to steel than yellow is. If most of your jewellery is yellow gold, choose yellow. If it is mostly silver with one or two gold pieces, rose gold is the gentler bridge.
The Citizen Corso at $340 is the best two tone watch in this guide from an established brand. It has a 27mm case, a black dial and Citizen's Eco Drive movement, which charges from any light and does not need battery changes. The black dial on two tone is a sharp, slightly unexpected combination that keeps the watch from looking like the department store pieces of the 1980s. If you want a watch you will never need to service for a battery, it is worth the extra money.
The Timex Easy Reader 25mm Two Tone at $87 is the practical option: 25mm, a white dial with large Arabic numerals, a date and Timex's Indiglo backlight, on a two tone expansion bracelet. It is less a piece of jewellery than a very good tool in jewellery colours.
For stacking ideas see how to stack a watch with bracelets. If you prefer a single metal, our guides to gold and silver watches for women cover each, and the best two tone watches includes men's models for couples.

A watch that combines two metal colours, usually gold tone and steel, most often with gold centre links and steel outer links on the bracelet and a gold bezel or crown.
Yes, that is its main advantage. A two tone watch ties gold and silver pieces together, so you can wear a gold ring and silver earrings without it looking like a mismatch.
It went out of favour in the 1990s and has come firmly back. The current versions tend to be smaller and simpler, which keeps them from looking dated.
Yellow gold and steel is the classic and goes with more. Rose gold and steel is softer and suits cooler colours, grey, blush and navy.
