Women's Watches for Work

The right work watch depends less on your job title than on what your day looks like: a boardroom, a clinic, a classroom or a studio. Here is what each one asks of a watch, and what we would wear.

A watch is one of the few accessories that is welcome in every workplace, and one of the few that says something specific: that you keep track of time, other people's included. Beyond that, the right work watch varies a lot. A lawyer, a nurse, a teacher and a designer all wear watches to work, and the watch that suits one of them would be the wrong choice for the others. So rather than one list, this guide is organised by the kind of working day you have.

What every work watch needs

Whatever the job, a few things make a watch easier to live with from nine to five.

The corporate office

Law, finance, consulting and any office where suits are still worn reward the most classic watches: a small rectangle or a plain round watch on a metal bracelet, with nothing on the dial that does not need to be there. The tank shape is the strongest choice here because it is narrow, flat and reads instantly as considered.

The Lucky Fours Calista at $79.99 is our pick: a rectangular gold tone case, a white dial with black Roman numerals and a railway minute track, on a gold tone link bracelet. It slides under a cuff, works with navy, grey and black tailoring, and looks right in a boardroom. If you work in a steel and silver environment, it also comes in a silver tone version with a stone set case, which is dressier.

From the established brands, the Seiko Essentials at $265 is a 30mm gold tone round watch with a champagne dial and is exactly the kind of watch that never looks out of place in a formal office. The Timex Addison 23mm at $159, a small square with Roman numerals, is the budget alternative. For a broader take on business dress watches, see expensive looking watches for the office.

Client facing roles

Sales, real estate, hospitality, events: jobs where you are presenting yourself as much as your work. Here a watch can carry a little more polish, a stone set bezel or a two tone bracelet, because it is part of a finished look rather than a tool.

The Venoria: a stone set bezel and two tone bracelet that move easily from a client meeting to dinner

The Lucky Fours Venoria at $79.99 is the watch we would choose. Its white dial is plain and readable, the small clear stones around the bezel add a touch of shine, and the two tone bracelet goes with both gold and silver jewellery, so it never clashes with whatever else you are wearing. The Citizen Corso at $340 is the established brand choice, a 27mm two tone watch with a black dial and a solar movement, smart and very practical. We compare two tone options in two tone watches for women.

Hands on jobs: healthcare, teaching, labs

If your work involves frequent hand washing, children, patients or gloves, decoration is a liability. You need a light watch that is easy to read quickly and easy to wipe clean, ideally one you would not mind knocking. Many healthcare workplaces have their own rules about wrist jewellery, so check those first.

The Timex Easy Reader 25mm in silver tone at $83 is a good tool for this: 25mm, a white dial with large Arabic numerals, a date and a backlight, on a steel expansion band with no clasp to catch. Its gold tone sibling, the Timex Easy Reader 25mm, is $87. Neither is a jewellery watch, and that is the point.

Creative studios and casual offices

Where the dress code is jeans and knitwear, a formal tank can look a little stiff. This is where a steel sports watch, or a watch with a coloured dial, comes into its own.

The Lucky Fours Lyra at $79.99 is an integrated bracelet watch with a rounded octagonal steel case and a ribbed dial in 6 colours, from white and black to pink, green and pale turquoise. It is robust enough for a busy studio, sporty enough for casual clothes, and the colour gives it personality without asking for attention. The black or blue dials suit almost anything; the pink and green are for people who like their work clothes to have a point of view.

If you want the Swiss version of this look and the budget allows, the Tissot PRX 35mm at $575 is a 35mm integrated bracelet watch in a gold coloured finish, the best finished watch in this guide.

One watch for work, one for after

Many women find that the watch that suits work is not the one they want for evenings. A tank or two tone for the day and a small jewellery watch for dinner covers almost everything. Lucky Fours' current buy one, get one free offer with mix and match makes that pair cost the same as one watch, and every watch in the range has a 316L stainless steel case, a Japanese quartz movement and a 12 month warranty. Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of watch is appropriate for the office?

A watch of moderate size on a metal bracelet or leather strap, with a plain dial and no noise. Steel, gold tone and two tone all work; what does not is anything that clanks against the desk or catches the light in a meeting.

Should a work watch be gold or silver?

Either. Match it to the jewellery you wear most. A two tone watch avoids the question entirely and goes with any combination of metals.

Is a smartwatch acceptable at work?

In most workplaces, yes. But a traditional watch reads as more formal, never lights up in a meeting and does not need charging, which is why many people keep one for client days.

What watch is best for nurses and teachers?

Something legible, light and easy to clean, on a bracelet or strap that copes with frequent hand washing. A watch with large numerals and a backlight, such as the Timex Easy Reader, is a sensible choice.
