The Best Silver Watches for Women

A silver watch is usually a steel watch, and that is its great advantage: there is no coating to wear through. Here is how to choose one by dial colour and bracelet, and the silver watches we would buy.

Gold watches get the attention, but silver watches are what most women actually wear every day. The reason is practical. A silver watch is almost always a stainless steel watch, and steel is the same colour all the way through. There is no plating to wear off at the clasp, no gold tone to fade at the edges, and scratches can be polished out rather than revealing a different metal underneath. A steel watch at five years old looks like a steel watch at five years old, not like a cheaper watch than it was.

That makes the choice of a silver watch less about the metal and more about two other things: the dial colour, and the type of bracelet.

Choosing by dial colour

On a gold watch, the dial is usually white or champagne and the case does the talking. On steel, the dial has more freedom, and it sets the character of the whole watch.

The everyday silver watch

The Lucky Fours Thea at $79.99 is the simplest silver watch we would recommend: a round steel case, a white dial with Roman numerals at the quarters and slim baton markers between them, a date window and a steel link bracelet. In plain steel it also comes with a black or a deep blue dial; the blue is the one we would choose, because it gives a conservative watch a little personality without making it any harder to wear.

From Timex, the closest comparison is the Timex Legacy Boyfriend 36mm at $169, a 36mm steel case with a white dial on a steel bracelet. It is deliberately larger, borrowing the proportions of a man's watch, and if you like a bigger watch on the wrist it is a very good one.

Silver with colour

The Lyra at $79.99 is the silver watch for people who want colour. It is an integrated bracelet watch with a rounded octagonal case and a horizontally ribbed dial, offered in pink, white, green, black, blue and a pale turquoise, all in steel. The ribbing catches the light as the wrist turns, which is what makes a bright dial look rich rather than flat. The Timex Legacy Mini 25mm in silver tone at $159 offers a smaller, rounder take on the same idea: a 25mm silver tone case and bracelet with an aquamarine dial.

Silver with sparkle

The Venoria at $79.99 sets a ring of small clear stones into the bezel around a white dial. Its bracelet mixes steel with gold or rose gold tone, and the steel does a lot of the work: next to it the stones read as frost rather than glitter, which keeps the watch on the right side of flashy. It is the watch for someone who wants one dressier silver piece, and it is covered with its two tone siblings in two tone watches for women.

Silver jewellery watches

The Tyla in silver tone with a black dial: a small watch with a graphic face

Most of the small jewellery watches in the Lucky Fours range are offered in silver tone as well as gold, and some look better in silver. Our favourite is the Tyla at $119.99, a tiny round dial on a narrow mesh bracelet. In gold it is soft and vintage; in silver it comes with a black dial, which turns it into something sharper and more modern.

The Timex alternatives

Timex makes more small silver watches than anyone at this price, and three are worth naming. The Timex Easy Reader 25mm in silver tone at $83 is the practical choice: a 25mm silver tone case on a steel expansion band with a white dial, large Arabic numerals, a date and a backlight. The Timex Transcend 31mm at $139 is a 31mm silver tone case with a silver sunray dial on a steel mesh band, a very clean dress watch. Note that some Timex women's cases are silver tone brass rather than steel, so the case behaves like a plated watch even when the bracelet is steel.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are silver watches made of silver?

Almost never. A silver coloured watch is usually stainless steel, sometimes a plated brass. Sterling silver is too soft for a watch case that is worn daily.

Is silver or gold more versatile for a watch?

Silver, slightly. Steel goes with white metals, with grey, navy and black, and does not clash with gold jewellery the way gold can clash with silver. If you wear both metals, a two tone watch is the other answer.

Do steel watches scratch?

Yes, polished steel picks up fine scratches with daily wear. They are part of how a steel watch ages, and polished surfaces can be refinished by a jeweller. See what 316L stainless steel is.

What dial colour goes best with a silver watch?

White and silver dials are the most versatile, black is the most graphic, and blue is the most popular colour choice. Pink and pale turquoise dials make steel feel lighter and more playful.
