Women's Watches With Coloured Stones

A watch with coloured stones is the one piece in a jewellery box that does two jobs. The colour you choose decides how often you will wear it, so this guide starts there.

Stones catch the light every time you move

For a long time a woman's watch with stones meant one thing: a ring of clear crystals around the bezel. That look still exists, but the more interesting thing happening in jewellery watches is colour. Bracelets set with green, blue, pink and multicolour stones, often in oval cabochon shapes, have moved watches closer to the kind of bracelet people collect, and they have made watches into one of the easiest pieces of colour to wear.

Before we get to the watches, one point of honesty that applies to every watch in this guide: these are coloured stones selected for their appearance, not precious gemstones. A green stone in a jade colour is not jade; a blue green stone with an opal play of colour is not opal. Real gemstones in these quantities would cost many times more than any watch here. Judge them as jewellery by how they look, and they look very good.

Where the stones sit changes the watch

There are two basic ways to set stones on a watch, and they produce very different objects.

Around the dial. A stone set bezel frames the face, so the stones and the time are read together. It is the more formal look, and with clear stones the more traditional one. The Lucky Fours Mila ($149.99) and Venoria ($79.99) both have a ring of small clear stones around a round dial; the Bulova Crystal 32mm at $396 sets 103 crystals into the bezel of a 32mm gold tone case, with crystal hour markers as well.

Along the bracelet. Stones in the bracelet move the colour away from the dial and around the wrist, so the watch reads as a bracelet first. This is where coloured stones are most effective, and where most of this guide's picks sit. The Kera does both.

Multicolour: the Kera

The Kera at $89.99 is the boldest watch here. A frame of small rectangular stones in red, pink, green, yellow and violet surrounds an oval white dial, and the same rows of stones run down the bracelet between gold links. Seen in a photograph it can look like a lot. On the wrist it behaves more like a rainbow tennis bracelet, and because it contains a little of every colour, it is surprisingly easy to match: anything in a solid colour picks up one of the stones. It is at its best with black, white, denim and plain knitwear.

Blue green: the Nyx

The Nyx at $89.99 alternates gold links with oval stones in a blue green opal colour, deep and slightly iridescent, around a round white dial. It is the most striking watch in this guide because the colour is so saturated against the gold. It works with navy, white, cream and anything with a nautical feel, and it is magnificent with a tan. In silver tone the same stones look cooler and more like sea glass.

Pale green: the Runa

The Runa at $89.99 uses larger oval stones in a soft jade colour between gold links, with a small oval dial. Pale green is the most forgiving colour a stone can be: it sits beside gold and silver jewellery, cream and camel, black and grey, without asking for attention. If you want a coloured stone watch you will wear three times a week rather than three times a year, this is the one.

Pink and violet: the Francesca

The Francesca at $89.99 is the most delicate of the coloured pieces: small oval stones in pink and violet tones spaced along a slim gold bracelet. It suits grey, soft pinks and black, and it is the natural choice for a younger recipient or for anyone who finds the others a little bold.

Clear stones: the Mila and the Venoria

If colour is not for you, clear stones around the dial give sparkle without it. The Mila at $149.99 is a small round dial with a stone set bezel on a gold link bracelet, the more dainty option. The Venoria at $79.99 is larger, with a white dial and a stone set bezel on a two tone bracelet, and suits an office as well as an evening. The Bulova Crystal is the established brand equivalent, a substantial 32mm watch on a fine mesh strap, and the most thoroughly finished of the three. For the opposite of restraint, see iced out watches that do not look cheap.

Caring for a stone set watch

Building a pair

A stone set watch is rarely anyone's only watch, which is why Lucky Fours' current buy one, get one free offer with mix and match fits it so neatly. Pair a coloured stone piece with a plain everyday watch, or take two colours, say the Runa and the Nyx, and wear them on different days. Every Lucky Fours watch has a 316L stainless steel case, a Japanese quartz movement and a 12 month warranty, and returns are accepted within 30 days, see the store terms. Frequently Asked Questions

Are the stones on affordable watches real gemstones?

No. Watches at this price use coloured stones chosen for their look, such as glass or synthetic stones. Real gemstones in these colours would cost many times more than the watch.

Can you wear a stone set watch every day?

You can, but stones are best protected from hard knocks. A stone set watch makes most sense as a second watch for evenings and occasions alongside a plain everyday one.

What colour stones go with everything?

Pale green and clear stones are the easiest to wear. Multicolour stones are surprisingly versatile too, because they pick up some colour from almost any outfit.

Is a watch with stones a good gift?

It is one of the best watch gifts, because it reads as jewellery and does not have to match an existing watch. See watch gifts for her under $100.
