Women's Watches
Stones on a watch can look like fine jewelry or like a costume. The difference is almost always restraint: where the stones go, how many there are, and what they sit against. Here are the rules and the watches that follow them.

"Iced out" started as a description of watches set so densely with diamonds that the metal disappeared. At the top of that world, a fully set watch can cost more than a house. Below it, the look has been copied in every material imaginable, and most of the results share one problem: they use too many stones, too large, in too many places. The effect is costume jewelry.
It does not have to be. A watch with stones can look genuinely expensive, and the rules for making it so are consistent enough to write down. They all come down to restraint.

Choose one location: the bezel, the markers or the bracelet. A watch with stones on the bezel, the dial and the bracelet at once has no point of focus, and the eye reads it as decoration rather than design. The bezel is the classic choice because a ring of stones frames the dial and catches light every time the wrist moves.
Many small stones of the same size look finer than a few large ones. Even spacing matters as much as size; a ring with gaps or stones that sit at different heights is the giveaway of a cheaply set watch. In product photographs, zoom in on the bezel and check that the stones form a continuous, regular line.
Stones need a calm background. A white, silver or black dial with simple markers lets the bezel do the work. A busy chronograph dial with a stone bezel is two statements fighting each other.
Stones on steel read as modern and cool; on gold tone they read as warm and classic. Both work. What does not work is a stone set watch in a pale, brassy gold, which makes the stones look like glass. Our guide to gold watches that look expensive explains how to judge the tone.
A large case covered in stones is the costume version. Keep the case moderate and the stones will look like jewelry. This applies doubly to women's watches, where the most precious looking pieces are small.
The Forge is an integrated bracelet sports watch with a gem set bezel around a ribbed dial. It follows the first three rules: the stones are confined to the bezel, they are small and run in an even ring, and the dial is a plain horizontal rib with simple markers. That makes it a sports watch that catches light rather than a piece of jewelry, which is the right balance for most men. It is $89.99, in 6 colorways including black, green, blue and rose gold tone.

If you want the integrated shape without any stones, the Caspian is the same family of design; see cheap watches that look expensive.
The Venoria is a women's watch with a gem set bezel, a white dial and a two tone gold and steel bracelet. Two tone is what makes it wearable every day: the gold warms the stones, the steel keeps the watch from looking formal. It is $79.99 in 5 colorways, including all steel, all gold and rose gold two tone versions. Of all the watches here, it is the one we would wear to an office.
The Mila is a small round dial with a gem set bezel on a gold bracelet. At this scale the stones read as fine jewelry rather than as a watch feature, the effect of a ring or a tennis bracelet. It is $149.99. For more watches in this direction, see women’s watches with colored stones.
The Timex Hailey 24mm is the most restrained stone set watch we know of from an established brand at this price. It has a small rectangular case set with crystals and an emerald dial with just four crystal markers, on a gold tone bracelet. It is listed at $104.99, and it is a good choice if you want stones but no bezel ring at all. It is also covered in our guide to square and rectangular watches.

To complete the picture, the versions to avoid: dials paved with stones so the hands disappear; stones in two or three colors on one watch; oversized cases with stones on the lugs and crown guards; and any listing that calls crystals diamonds without a certificate and a price to match. If a watch makes you think of a costume rather than a jewelry case, trust that instinct.
The best way to wear stones is to make them the only bright thing on your wrist. Keep other jewelry simple, size the bracelet so the watch sits still, and keep the bezel clean. For a broader look at statement pieces, see statement watches.

No. Watches at this price use crystals or cubic zirconia. That is not a problem in itself; what matters is how evenly they are cut and set. Never assume stones are precious unless the listing says so and the price reflects it.
Clean the bezel gently with a soft brush and a little mild soapy water, then dry it well. Lotion and soap residue dull stones faster than anything else.
A watch with stones only on the bezel, in steel, can work in a relaxed office. A fully iced watch is for evenings and events. When in doubt, choose the smaller dose.
Stones as hour markers on a plain dial, or a thin ring of small stones on the bezel. Both catch light without announcing themselves. The Timex Hailey 24mm uses just four crystal markers, for example.
