The Best Gold Watches Under $100

No watch under $100 is solid gold, and none should pretend to be. What you can buy is a well made gold tone finish over steel. Here is how to tell a good one from a brassy one, and the gold watches worth buying.

A gold watch for under $100 is a gold colored watch. That is not a criticism, it is the starting point. Solid gold is priced by weight, and a gold dress watch from a major Swiss house starts at about $17,500. What you are buying at this end of the market is a finish, and finishes vary enormously: some look warm, even and believable from a foot away, others look like a costume prop by the second week. The difference has less to do with price than with the shade of gold, the metal underneath and the design of the watch it is applied to.

What is gold tone, exactly?

Gold tone means a thin layer of gold colored material bonded to the surface of the watch. There are two broad ways of doing it. Traditional electroplating deposits a layer of gold alloy onto the metal in a chemical bath. Newer vapor deposition methods, usually labeled PVD or IP, bond a hard colored coating in a vacuum chamber. Both can look good. What matters more for a watch you intend to wear often is the metal underneath.

If a listing does not say stainless steel, assume it is not. Every Lucky Fours watch in this guide is 316L stainless steel under the finish, and Casio lists stainless steel bands for the A159WGEA and AQ230GA.

Which shade of gold looks expensive?

This is the single biggest factor in whether a cheap gold watch passes. Real gold, especially 18 karat, is a slightly muted, warm yellow. Many inexpensive finishes are brighter and more lemony, and that brightness is what reads as imitation from across a room. Look at photos taken in daylight rather than studio shots, and favor finishes that look a little soft rather than mirror bright.

The other shades are more forgiving. Rose gold tone has a pink copper warmth that does not have a natural reference point for most people, so small differences in shade go unnoticed. Two tone, steel with gold accents, dilutes the gold so there is less of it to judge. If you want gold and are nervous about it, either is a safer start. Our guide to two tone watches covers the second option.

Lucky Fours Prague: the best gold watch under $100

The Prague is a gold tone chronograph with a black dial and three light subdials, on an integrated gold tone bracelet. That combination, gold case with a black panda dial, is one of the most effective in all of watchmaking, because the black dial breaks up the gold and stops the watch from looking like a single block of yellow metal. It costs $89.99 with a Japanese quartz movement and 7 colorways, including blue and green dials and plain steel versions. For more in this style, see panda dial chronographs.

Lucky Fours Calista: the best gold watch for women

The Lucky Fours Calista: a tank style case and gold tone bracelet

The Calista is a rectangular tank style watch in gold tone, with Roman numerals on a white dial and a gold tone bracelet. The rectangle is one of the oldest shapes in women's watches and one of the most flattering on a slim wrist, and in gold it doubles as a piece of jewelry. At $79.99 there are 4 colorways, including versions with small stones on the dial and a silver version. Our guide to tank style watches for women compares the alternatives.

Lucky Fours Wraith: the best rose gold

The Wraith is an integrated bracelet sports watch finished entirely in rose gold tone, with a black ribbed dial. Rose gold over a black dial is a quieter combination than yellow gold and black, and it suits warmer skin tones particularly well. At $79.99 it is also a good example of why rose gold is the safest way to wear gold on a budget: there is no shade of rose gold most people would call wrong.

Lucky Fours Caspian in Gold: the gold sports watch

The brand's best seller, the Caspian, also comes in a full gold tone version. It has the same rounded octagonal case and integrated bracelet as the steel models, at $79.99. It is louder than the Prague or the Wraith, a gold sports watch with nothing to tone it down, so it is the one to choose if you want gold to be the point.

Casio A159WGEA: the gold digital

Casio's Casio A159WGEA Vintage Gold at $79.95 gets gold right by being playful about it. It is a small 1980s style digital in gold and black with a stainless steel band. Because it is so clearly a retro digital, nobody expects it to be a luxury watch, and so it never looks like a cheap one.

Casio AQ230GA: half gold, half steel

The Casio AQ230GA Vintage Gold at $79.95 combines an analog dial with a small digital display, in a case and band that Casio describes as half gold and half silver. It is a vintage design with a lot of charm and an easy way to try gold without committing to it.

Casio LA680WGA: the smallest gold watch

For women who want a tiny gold watch, the Casio LA680WGA Vintage Gold at $69.95 is a slim gold metal digital with an alarm, a stopwatch and a calendar. It wears like a fine bracelet and costs less than any other watch here.

What does a little more than $100 buy in gold?

Step just past the budget and the established makers offer analog gold watches. The Casio MTP1302PGC Gold at $120 is a gold version of Casio's slim dress watch. The Timex Q Continental 39mm Gold Tone at $199 pairs a gold tone steel case and bracelet with a green dial, a combination we cover in gold and green watches. Neither is solid gold either; what the extra money buys is the maker's name and, in Timex's case, a more substantial bracelet.

How do you keep a gold tone watch looking gold?

With buy one, get one free at Lucky Fours, the easy way to wear gold without overdoing it is to pair it: a gold Prague and a steel watch for the days gold feels like too much, for $89.99 together.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are gold watches under $100 real gold?

No. A solid gold watch costs thousands of dollars because of the metal alone. Watches under $100 use a gold colored coating over steel or brass. The best ones put that coating over stainless steel, so the watch keeps its look and does not discolor if the coating wears.

Does gold tone wear off?

Over time, at the points of most friction: the clasp, the underside of the bracelet and the edges of the case. How quickly depends on the coating and how you wear the watch. Taking it off for manual work and wiping it with a soft cloth helps it last.

Which looks more expensive, yellow or rose gold?

Neither by default. A slightly muted yellow gold and a soft rose gold both read as expensive; bright, shiny yellow is what looks cheap. Our guide to gold watches that look expensive goes into detail.

Can men wear gold watches?

Yes, and gold has come back strongly in men's watches. A gold tone watch with a black or green dial is the easiest place to start. See the best gold watches for men.
