The Best Women's Watches Under $200

Between $100 and $200 the question changes from what is good enough to what kind of watch you want. One watch from an established brand, or two with more character? Here is how we would spend the budget.

A little more budget buys finer details

Under $100 most women's watch buying is about avoiding the bad ones. Under $200 that problem largely goes away, and a more interesting choice appears. You can buy one watch from an established American or Japanese brand, with full specifications and a long service record behind it. Or you can buy one of the more elaborate pieces from an online brand, or two of its simpler ones. Neither is wrong. They suit different people, and the point of this guide is to help you tell which one you are.

The watches in this guide, ranked

Every watch this guide mentions, ranked by Value Score or by what one watch costs today with each store's current offer counted.

Route one: a single watch from an established brand

Timex is the strongest brand in this bracket for women, simply because it makes more small watches under $200 than anyone else and publishes exact dimensions for all of them. Three stand out.

Timex Legacy Mini

The Timex Legacy Mini 25mm at $179 is a 25mm round watch in gold tone with a matching gold sunray dial and a link bracelet with a deployant clasp. It is a monochrome piece, gold on gold, and looks more expensive than it is because the dial and case are the same colour. The same watch with a pink dial, the Timex Legacy Mini 25mm in pink, is listed at $179.

Timex Cavatina

The Timex Cavatina 19mm at $159 is a 19mm oval gold tone case with Roman numerals on a gold tone bracelet: a small, slightly old fashioned watch in the best sense. The Timex Cavatina Mini 17mm at $139 goes smaller still, a 17mm cushion case on an expansion band.

Timex Addison

The Timex Addison 23mm at $159 is a square gold tone case with a white dial and partial Roman numerals. It is the most office friendly of the three.

The advantages of this route are real: you know exactly how big the watch is before it arrives, the brand will still be servicing watches in twenty years, and Timex cases are cleanly finished at this price. The limitation is range. Timex's small gold watches share a fairly narrow vocabulary of plain dials and simple bracelets, and none of them carries stones or pearls.

Route two: something more elaborate

The top of the Lucky Fours women's range, between $119.99 and $149.99, is where the brand puts its more detailed jewellery pieces. These are the watches with the most character in this guide, and each one is aimed at a particular look.

The Phila at $139.99 is our favourite. It is a small rectangular dial on a thin gold bracelet, with the narrow, upright outline of a 1930s cocktail watch. Next to the Timex Addison it is smaller, slimmer and more obviously a piece of jewellery; next to the Calista, the brand's larger tank style watch, it is far more delicate. It also comes in silver tone. If the vintage look appeals, our guide to vintage style watches for women covers it in full.

The others in this group, all at $149.99:

Just above $100, the Tyla at $119.99 is the smallest watch Lucky Fours makes, a tiny round dial on a narrow gold mesh bracelet, with a silver tone version that has a black dial.

Route three: two watches

This is the route the arithmetic favours at the moment. Lucky Fours runs buy one, get one free with mix and match across its range, so for $149.99 you can take a Mila for evenings and a Lyra or a Calista for every day. That is less than the Timex Legacy Mini, for two watches that do different jobs. A watch you wear to work and a watch you wear out are genuinely different objects, and most women who wear watches end up owning both. Every Lucky Fours watch has a 316L stainless steel case, a Japanese quartz movement and a 12 month warranty, and the brand has 15,000+ customers and a 4.9 rating from 13,128 reviews.

The trade off is documentation. Lucky Fours does not list case dimensions for its women's watches, so you are buying from photographs. The wrist shots on each product page are the best guide, and returns are accepted within 30 days, see the store terms.

Just above $200: when to stretch

Three watches sit just over this budget and are worth knowing about, because for some buyers they are the right answer.

The Q Timex Continental Mini 24mm at $209, a 24mm gold tone steel watch with a textured champagne dial, sits only a few dollars over the line too.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a $200 women's watch better than a $100 one?

Not automatically. Between $100 and $200 you mostly pay for a brand name, a published specification and sometimes a better finish. The timekeeping of a quartz watch barely changes with price.

What is the best Timex women's watch under $200?

For a classic shape, the Timex Legacy Mini 25mm at $179, a 25mm gold tone watch with a sunray dial. For something smaller, the Timex Cavatina 19mm at $159.

Is the Citizen Corso worth the extra over $200?

If you want a watch that runs on light and never needs a battery, yes. It is listed at $340 on Citizen's site and has a 27mm two tone case.

How do I size a bracelet watch bought online?

Most link bracelets are shortened by removing links, which a jeweller does in minutes. Mesh and expansion bands adjust differently. Our guide to adjusting a watch bracelet explains each type.
