Small Watches for Women and Slim Wrists

On a slim wrist, a watch that is a few millimetres too big looks borrowed. Here is how to measure, which sizes work for which wrists, and the small watches that fit properly.

Most watch sizing advice is written for men's wrists, where the question is whether 40mm or 42mm looks better. Slim wrists have a different problem. Many women's watches are now 34mm to 38mm, and on a wrist under six inches around that size overhangs the edges, the lugs stick out past the wrist and the watch looks as though it belongs to someone else. A small watch that fits looks deliberate. This guide is about finding it.

The watches in this guide, ranked

Every watch this guide mentions, ranked by Value Score or by what one watch costs today with each store's current offer counted.

Step one: measure your wrist

Cut a strip of paper about a finger wide, wrap it around your wrist just above the wrist bone where a watch sits, mark the overlap and measure it flat against a ruler. Do it twice. Most adult women's wrists measure between about 5.5 and 7 inches. Under 6 inches is generally considered a slim wrist, and that is the range this guide is mainly written for.

Then look at the top of your wrist, not just the circumference. Two wrists of the same circumference can be flat and wide or round and narrow, and a flat wrist carries a slightly larger watch.

Step two: match the case to the wrist

The table below is a starting point. It assumes a round case; for other shapes, see the next section.

WristReads as jewelleryReads as an everyday watchReads as oversized
Under 5.75 inUnder 22mm22mm to 28mmOver 32mm
5.75 to 6.5 inUnder 24mm26mm to 32mmOver 36mm
Over 6.5 inUnder 26mm28mm to 36mmOver 38mm

There is a second number that matters as much as diameter: the lug to lug length, the distance from the tip of the top lugs to the tip of the bottom ones. If it is longer than the top of your wrist is wide, the bracelet will leave the case at an angle and the watch will look perched rather than worn. Our guide to choosing a watch size explains it in more detail, and watch size by wrist has the full chart.

Step three: choose a shape that helps

A circle is the largest looking shape for a given width, because it fills the wrist side to side. Rectangles, ovals and squares all look smaller.

Small watches we recommend

The Tyla's tiny round case and narrow mesh, the smallest watch in the Lucky Fours range

For the very slimmest wrists

The Lucky Fours Tyla at $119.99 is the smallest watch the brand makes, a tiny round dial on a narrow gold mesh bracelet. Mesh suits small wrists well, because mesh bracelets usually adjust at the clasp rather than a whole link at a time; check the listing for how this one fastens. Lucky Fours does not publish its case sizes, so the wrist photographs on the product page are the best guide; next to a slim wrist the Tyla is clearly in the jewellery range. From Timex, the Timex Cavatina Mini 17mm at $139 is 17mm, the smallest published size we have found from an established brand, on an expansion band.

A small square

The Milo at $149.99 puts a small square gold dial on a gold link bracelet. The square keeps it tidy on the wrist, and the bracelet gives it enough presence that it does not disappear. The Timex Addison 23mm at $159 is a 23mm square on a slimmer bracelet, a calmer alternative with a published size.

Small and practical

If you need to read the time precisely, a tiny dial is a frustration. The Timex Easy Reader 25mm in silver tone at $83 is a good compromise: 25mm, which still fits a slim wrist, with large Arabic numerals, a date and a backlight. The Timex Legacy Mini 25mm at $179 is the same 25mm in a dressier gold tone with a sunray dial.

Small and classic

For an everyday watch in the 27mm to 30mm range, the Citizen Corso at $340 is 27mm with a solar movement, and the Seiko Essentials at $265 is 30mm in gold tone. Both sit comfortably on a wrist around six inches.

Step four: get the bracelet right

A watch of the right size on a bracelet that is too long looks wrong, because it slides down toward the hand and turns. On a link bracelet, have links removed evenly from both sides of the clasp so the dial stays centred. On a slim wrist, ask before buying how many links can come out; some bracelets reach their minimum before they reach your size. Mesh adjusts at the clasp in small steps, and expansion bands can usually lose a link or two. See how to adjust a watch bracelet at home. If you are ordering online and unsure, Lucky Fours accepts returns within 30 days, see the store terms.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size watch is best for a small wrist?

For a wrist under about 6 inches around, a case of roughly 20mm to 28mm usually looks right, and under 24mm if you want the watch to read as jewellery. Shape matters too: rectangles and ovals wear smaller than circles.

How do I measure my wrist for a watch?

Wrap a strip of paper around the wrist just above the wrist bone, mark where it overlaps, and measure the length with a ruler. A soft tape measure works too.

Can a bracelet be made small enough for a tiny wrist?

Most link bracelets can be shortened by several links, but there is a limit. If your wrist is very slim, check how much a bracelet can be shortened before buying, or choose mesh, which adjusts in small steps.

Is a 36mm watch too big for a woman?

Not if that is the look you want. A larger watch worn on a small wrist is a deliberate style, borrowed from men's watches. It just should not be an accident; see our watch size by wrist chart.
