MVMT made the slim, clean fashion watch an online staple. Several other brands now sell the same idea for less. We matched each MVMT favorite to cheaper watches that do the same job.

MVMT's pitch when it launched in 2013 was simple: a clean, slim watch that looked like it cost more than it did, sold online without a jeweler's markup. It worked so well that the look is now everywhere, and MVMT's range now runs to divers, ceramic cases and automatics as well. That leaves room for anyone who just wants the original idea. Below we take MVMT's three most recognizable styles and set cheaper watches against each, from Lucky Fours, Casio, Timex, Armitron and Swatch. Where MVMT is still the right answer, we say so.

The MVMT Legacy Slim Panther Black 42mm at $118.40 is the MVMT most people picture: a 42mm black coated steel case listed at 7.7mm thick, a black dial and a leather strap, with a Japanese quartz movement inside. Its appeal is the stealthy, monochrome look and the way it slides under a cuff.
The closest match for less is the Lucky Fours Aura at $79.99. It takes the same all black idea further, with a black octagonal case, black dial and a matching black bracelet in place of the strap. It is a bolder shape than the round Legacy, and the bracelet means nothing to wear out. With the current buy one, get one free offer, mix and match across the range, it works out at about $40 a watch if you buy two.

If you would rather have a round case and a household name, the Casio MTP1302D Dress Watch at $89.95 has a black sunburst dial and a steel bracelet in a 38.5mm case. It is smaller and more conventional than the Legacy, and it is one of the best value dress watches anywhere. For a casual version, the Timex Weekender 38mm at $77 is 38mm on a fabric strap with Indiglo lighting.
All three alternatives cost less than the MVMT. What the Legacy keeps is its thinness: none of the others is listed as slim, so if you wear tight shirt cuffs, that is a real point in MVMT's favor.
The MVMT Odyssey II Catalina Blue 40mm at $131.60 is MVMT's take on the 1970s steel sports watch with an integrated bracelet: 40mm, blue dial, Japanese quartz. It is good value by MVMT's standards, and the shape is the most popular in affordable watches right now.
The Lucky Fours Fortuno at $79.99 is a minimal steel sports watch with a teal sunray dial, a day date window and an integrated style bracelet. The Caspian, the brand's best seller, is the same price with a horizontally ribbed dial and a rounded octagon case, in 6 colorways. Among established brands, the Timex Q Continental 39mm at $179 is a 39mm steel quartz watch on an integrated bracelet; it costs more than the Odyssey but carries the Timex name and its heritage styling. We compare every option in integrated bracelet watch alternatives.
The MVMT Cali Diver Solar Riptide Blue 42mm at $134 is a 42mm diver with a solar quartz movement and a screw down crown, a genuinely practical watch for the price. This is the one MVMT we would not try to replace on value alone: solar power at this price is rare, and none of the cheaper alternatives here offer it.
If you only want the look of a dive watch, the Lucky Fours Baretta at $129.99 has a green rotating bezel and green dial on a steel bracelet. Treat it as a dive style watch for everyday wear. If you need a watch rated for swimming and diving, buy one whose specifications say so; our explainer on dive style watches covers what to look for.

Armitron, an American brand selling affordable watches since 1975, has the Armitron 1975 40mm Day Date at $95, a 40mm watch with a matte black dial and a day date, which scores well on our Value Score for the price. And if you want something lighter and more playful, Swatch's Swatch Blue Away at $85 is a 34mm Swiss quartz watch in a bio sourced case. Neither is a direct copy of an MVMT, which is part of the appeal.
MVMT's FAQ describes a two year limited warranty and a 60 day returns window, both longer than many budget brands, and its solar Cali Diver has no real rival at its price. If you want a very slim watch or a solar diver, buy the MVMT. If you want the minimal look and would rather spend less, or would like two watches instead of one, the alternatives above do the job. Our guide to minimalist watches for men has more in the same vein, and MVMT vs Vincero compares MVMT with its closest online rival.

Vincero, Daniel Wellington and Nordgreen sell a similar kind of watch online at similar or higher prices. For less money, Lucky Fours, Casio, Timex and Armitron all make minimal watches on steel bracelets or leather straps that cover the same looks.
They are well designed fashion watches with Japanese movements, and the prices we checked were mostly reduced from list. Whether they are worth it depends on whether you value the brand's design; the same plain black or blue watch can be had for less from the brands in this guide.
Among the watches here, the Timex Weekender 38mm at $77 and the Lucky Fours Aura at $79.99 are the least expensive. The Aura is all black on a steel bracelet; the Timex is a casual watch on a fabric strap.
Black on black dials trade some legibility for looks, especially in low light. If you need to read the time at a glance, pick a black dial with white or silver hands. See the best black watches for men for both kinds.
