Watch 101
On a leather strap watch, the strap does half the work. We explain what separates a good one from a poor one, how to look after it, and which watches on leather are worth buying.

Put the same watch on a steel bracelet and on a brown leather strap and you get two different watches. The bracelet version is cooler, more modern and more sporting. The leather version is warmer, quieter and older in spirit, closer to the watches of the 1950s and 1960s when a bracelet was the exception. That is why so many watches are designed for leather from the start, and why the strap deserves as much attention as the dial when you buy one.
This guide starts with the strap: what it is made of, what color does, how to look after it. Then it names the watches on leather worth buying, from a little under $100 to a mechanical step up.

Most affordable watch straps are calf leather, and the differences between them come down to a few things you can judge from photos and a description.
Smooth leather is the most versatile and ages with a soft patina. Croc pattern leather, calf embossed with a scale texture, is the dress option and hides small scuffs well. Suede and nubuck, with their brushed surface, are casual and look best on pilot and field watches. Padded straps, slightly raised in the middle, add depth and suit larger cases.
Contrast stitching, white or cream thread on brown or black, makes a strap sportier. Matching stitching is dressier. Look at the edges too: a strap with painted, smooth edges looks more finished than one with raw cut edges, though raw edges suit rugged field watches.
Black is the most formal and the easiest to match with dark shoes. Dark brown is the most versatile and the safest single choice. Tan and honey are casual and summery. Green, navy and burgundy straps are where personality comes in, and a cheap way to change the feel of a watch you already own.
A strap should be the same width as the gap between the lugs, usually 18 to 22mm on men's watches, and it looks best when it narrows slightly toward the buckle. A strap that stays wide all the way round reads as sporty and heavy; one with a gentle taper looks dressier and sits more comfortably under a cuff. If you replace a strap, measure the lug width with a ruler rather than guessing, since a millimeter too narrow leaves a visible gap at the case.
The Lucky Fours Voyager is a gold tone chronograph with a dark dial on a brown croc pattern strap, and it shows how much a strap can carry a watch. On a bracelet the gold case would be loud; on brown leather it becomes warm and slightly old fashioned, like a dress chronograph from the 1970s. It is the watch in this guide that most looks the part with a blazer, and it costs $79.99 with 4 colorways, including blue and green dials.

The Atlas is the simpler choice: a rounded octagon case in rose gold tone, a white dial with fine horizontal ribbing, and a dark brown strap. With no subdials, it is thinner looking and more versatile than the Voyager, and it moves easily from office to dinner. At $79.99 it is one of the least expensive watches here, and the versions without rose gold suit a cooler, steel toned wardrobe.
Two more Lucky Fours watches are built around leather. The Portfolio at $89.99 puts a panda chronograph with a black bezel on brown leather, the vintage racing look we cover in our racing chronograph guide. The Etiènne, with its melted gold case on black leather, is a different proposition altogether, and we give it its own space in art watches.
The Timex Weekender 40mm at $119 is the everyday leather strap watch for many Americans: a 40mm case, a blue dial with 12 and 24 hour indexes, a date with a magnifier, a backlight and a slip through strap that Timex designed to be swapped in seconds. It is casual rather than dressy, and very easy to live with. The Timex Waterbury Classic 40mm at $149 is the dressier Timex, with a cream Roman numeral dial, a tan smooth leather strap and quick release spring bars.
For a mechanical watch on leather, the Seiko 5 Sports Field at $350 pairs an automatic movement and black dial with a black leather strap with contrast stitching, and the Timex Marlin 1965 Reissue Hand Wound 34mm at $259 is a small hand wound dress watch on leather in the 1960s manner.

With buy one, get one free on Lucky Fours, one practical approach is to pair a leather watch with a bracelet watch and alternate them, which gives the strap the rest it needs. If you are weighing the two options, bracelet or strap lays out the trade offs, and watches on rubber straps covers the summer alternative. For formal occasions, see the best dress watches for men.

With daily wear, usually one to two years before it cracks, stretches at the holes or starts to smell. Rotating between two straps or two watches roughly doubles that.
Occasional rain will not ruin it, but leather that is soaked regularly stiffens and cracks. Take a leather strap watch off before washing up or swimming, and let a damp strap dry naturally, never on a radiator.
Calf leather embossed with a pattern that imitates crocodile scales. It gives the look of an exotic strap at a fraction of the price and is how almost every affordable dress strap is made.
Often, if the watch has standard lugs and you buy a strap of the right width. Integrated bracelet watches usually cannot take a standard strap. Our guide to bracelet or strap explains the difference.
