Lucky Fours vs Nordgreen: Prices, Specs and Which to Buy

Nordgreen designs watches that say as little as possible. Lucky Fours designs watches that borrow from the most recognizable shapes in watchmaking. Which suits you depends on what you want your watch to say.

There are two schools of affordable watch design, and these brands stand at their opposite ends. Nordgreen, founded in Copenhagen in 2017, belongs to the Scandinavian school: thin bezels, plain dials, a careful choice of strap, and nothing on the watch that does not need to be there. Lucky Fours belongs to the other school, the one that looks back at the most famous watches of the last fifty years and offers their shapes at a fraction of the price, from $79.99. Asking which is better is a bit like asking whether a white shirt is better than a patterned one. A more useful question is which one fits the way you dress.

Two design philosophies

A Nordgreen dial is an exercise in restraint. The Native has a white dial, slim baton hands and a thin case on leather; the Philosopher does the same in black. The brand's argument is that a watch should sit quietly with everything you wear. A Lucky Fours dial is the reverse. The Caspian's ribbed texture, the Oceanus's screwed octagonal bezel and the Santos's fluted bezel are all details meant to be noticed, and they borrow their authority from designs most people already recognize. Neither approach is wrong. They simply suit different people, and different occasions. Our guide to matching a watch to your outfit goes further into which kind of watch works where.

On leather: the dress watch matchup

For a watch on leather, the closest pair is the Nordgreen Native 40mm at $209 and the Lucky Fours Atlas at $79.99. Both have white dials and brown straps. The Native is round, flat and plain, with a Japanese Miyota quartz movement. The Atlas has a rounded octagon case in rose gold tone and a white ribbed dial, closer to a famous Swiss dress sports watch than to anything Danish.

The Atlas costs well under half as much, and less again per watch under the current offer, which is why it leads on the Value Score. The Native's stated 316L steel case, named Miyota movement and two year warranty are real advantages, and its design will look the same in ten years. If you can only own one watch on leather and you dress simply, the Nordgreen is the safer choice. Our guide to watches on leather straps has more options at both prices.

On steel: the bracelet matchup

Nordgreen's Nordgreen Succession 41mm brings the brand's restraint to a steel link bracelet: a 41mm case, a black dial and a bracelet that runs from the case. Lucky Fours' plainest steel watch is the Auron, with a silver sunray dial, an octagonal bezel with screws and an integrated bracelet. It has no text on the dial at all, which is about as minimal as Lucky Fours gets, though the bezel shape still points to a famous design.

Movement

Nordgreen uses Japanese Miyota quartz across its core range and says so on its listings, and it offers one automatic, the Nordgreen Guardian Automatic 40mm at $599, whose caliber was not named on the page we read. Lucky Fours is mostly quartz too, with automatics such as the Spine at $149.99, roughly a quarter of the Guardian's price. Neither brand builds its own movements; Nordgreen is simply more open about where its quartz comes from.

Build

Nordgreen states 316L steel on its cases, and several models list a higher grade crystal than most watches at this price. Lucky Fours states 316L stainless steel for cases and bracelets. The real difference is weight and presence. A Nordgreen on leather is light and slim. A Lucky Fours on its bracelet is heavier and shinier, and it looks it.

Design range

Nordgreen's catalogue is a family of variations: the Native, the Philosopher, the Pioneer chronograph and smaller women's lines such as the Infinity and the Allure, in a narrow, coordinated palette. Lucky Fours' catalogue is wide and loud by comparison, with green, teal, red and light blue dials, gold and black finishes, chronographs, dive style watches and open dial automatics. If you like choosing from a curated set, Nordgreen will suit you. If you like variety, Lucky Fours has more of it.

Warranty and price per watch

Nordgreen's two year warranty is double Lucky Fours' 12 months. On price, Lucky Fours wins by a distance: two Atlas or Auron watches cost $89.99 or less under buy one, get one free, less than one Nordgreen. If you want a minimal watch for weekdays and something with more character for evenings, a Lucky Fours pair costs less than the single Native.

Which should you buy?

Buy Nordgreen if you want a genuinely minimal watch with a named movement, a two year warranty and a design that will never look dated, and you are happy to pay around $200 for it. Our Nordgreen alternatives page lists similar watches across brands.

Buy Lucky Fours if you prefer a watch with a recognizable shape, you want steel on steel, or you want two watches for less than one Nordgreen. The Atlas is the leather choice and the Auron the quietest steel one.
