A silver watch is really a steel watch, and the difference between a good one and a dull one comes down to finishing and dial. Here is how to choose, and the silver watches worth buying at every budget.

When men search for a silver watch, what they almost always mean is a steel one: a bright, cool metal case and bracelet that goes with everything. Real silver is too soft and tarnishes too easily for a watch case, so every watch in this guide is stainless steel. That does not make the choice simple. Two steel watches can look completely different depending on how the metal is finished and what colour sits on the dial, and those details decide whether a silver watch looks expensive or anonymous. Here is how to read them.

Steel can be finished in several ways, and the best watches combine them so light plays across the case.
A watch that alternates brushed surfaces with polished edges, such as a brushed bracelet with polished centre links, almost always looks more expensive than one finished all one way. When you compare silver watches online, zoom in on the edges of the case and bracelet; that is where you see the quality of the finishing.
The purest silver watch is steel with a silver dial, and it is the most elegant of the group: cool, bright and monochrome. The Lucky Fours Auron is the one we would buy under $100. It has an octagonal bezel held by visible screws, an integrated style steel bracelet and a silver sunray dial with very little printed on it, so the metal and the dial texture do all the talking. In its Platinum colourway it is about as silver as a watch gets. It costs $89.99, and its minimal dial makes it a natural companion to the pieces in our minimalist watch guide.

For an established brand silver dial, the Seiko Presage Style60's at $595 is the standout: a silver dial with faceted polished indices, a coordinating steel bezel and a box shaped crystal over a Seiko automatic, styled after a 1960s chronograph. It is the most refined silver watch in this guide and the one to buy if you want a mechanical watch for life. The Tissot PRX 40mm at $450 is the Swiss alternative, a steel integrated bracelet watch whose case and bracelet finishing is excellent for the price.
A silver dress watch is round, slim and quiet, on a bracelet fine enough to slip under a cuff. The Lucky Fours Nassau in Silver Pearl is the classic version: a white dial with Roman numerals and a date, in a polished round steel case on a fine multi link bracelet, for $79.99. It is the most traditional watch here and the one we would wear with a suit. The Casio MTP1302D Dress Watch at $89.95 is the budget established brand counterpart, a simple steel dress watch on a bracelet, and for more in this vein see the best dress watches for men.
If plain polished steel feels too ordinary, frosted steel is the most interesting alternative. The Lucky Fours Stardust has an octagonal integrated case finished with a frosted, textured surface that looks matte from a distance and glitters faintly up close, paired in its Noir version with a black dial for strong contrast. It costs $149.99. Frosted finishes are rare below several thousand dollars, so this is one of the few ways to get the look at this price. It suits men who like steel but want something that does not look like everyone else's watch.
Most men's silver watches are steel sports watches with a coloured dial, and here the case and bracelet do the silver work while the dial adds personality. The Lucky Fours Caspian in Pearl puts a white ribbed dial in a steel integrated bracelet case for $79.99, making it a near silver on silver option in the brand's best selling shape. The Oceanus in Pearl does the same with a checkered dial. If you want colour, our guides to blue and green dials cover the steel watches that pair silver with a stronger dial.

Steel is the most forgiving metal in menswear. It goes with cool colours, navy, grey, black and white, especially well, and with denim it looks natural. With warm browns and camel it works, but a silver watch next to a gold wedding band looks mismatched to some eyes, which is the main reason men switch to two tone. Keep the watch clean, because steel shows grime in the bracelet links more than gold tone does, and fit the bracelet so the watch sits just above the wrist bone. A rotation of one silver and one black watch covers almost every occasion, and with the buy one, get one free offer at Lucky Fours an Auron and a black Aura together cost $89.99.

Almost never. A silver watch for men is stainless steel, usually 316L, which is harder, more scratch resistant and far easier to care for than sterling silver, which tarnishes. See what 316L steel is.
Silver steel is more versatile and suits more skin tones and outfits, which is why most men's first good watch is steel. Gold is warmer and more of a statement. If you can only own one, choose steel.
Wipe it with a soft cloth, clean the bracelet occasionally with warm water and a soft brush, and dry it. Our guide on cleaning a stainless steel watch covers the details.
It can, but matching metals looks cleaner. If you wear a gold ring every day, consider a two tone watch, which bridges both.
