The Best White Dial Watches

A white dial is the most legible and, in many ways, the most formal dial colour there is. Here is the difference between white, silver, cream and panda, and the white dial watches we would buy at every budget.

White dials look crisp with almost anything

If you want a watch you can read at a glance in any light, a white dial is the answer. Dark hands on a light background is how instruments, clocks and the first wristwatches were made, and it remains the most legible combination there is. A white dial is also, quietly, the most formal colour in watchmaking: the classic dress watch is a white dial in a slim case on a black strap. Yet white works just as well on a racing chronograph or a weekend watch. The trick is knowing which kind of white you want.

White, silver, cream or pearl?

Retailers use these words loosely, so here is what each normally means.

DialWhat it looks likeFeels
WhiteFlat, bright and opaque, like paper or lacquerCrisp, formal, very legible
SilverMetallic, often sunray or brushed, changes with lightCooler, more technical
Cream or ivoryOff white with a warm tintVintage, soft
Pearl (as a colourway name)Usually white or near white with a slight sheenClean and slightly dressy
PandaWhite dial with dark subdialsSporty, motorsport

Naming varies by brand; photos on a wrist are the best guide.

Lucky Fours tends to call its white dials "Pearl", which in practice means a clean white, sometimes with a subtle texture. For metallic silver dials, see our silver watches guide.

The white dress watch

The archetypal white dial watch is a dress watch, and the Lucky Fours Nassau in Silver Pearl is a textbook example: a white dial with Roman numerals and a date, in a polished round steel case on a fine multi link bracelet. It is the watch to wear with a suit, and at $79.99 it costs less than most ties. If you want it on leather, a black or dark brown strap turns it fully formal. Our guide to dress watches for men sets it among the alternatives.

For a more vintage white dress watch from an established brand, the Timex Marlin Chatham Automatic 36mm at $289 has a 36mm cushion case, a clean white dial with Breguet numerals and a black leather strap, over a self winding automatic movement shown through an exhibition caseback. It is small by modern standards and very elegant.

The white everyday watch

For daily wear, a white dial on a steel sports watch is the brightest and most cheerful option, particularly in summer. The Lucky Fours Caspian in Pearl puts a white ribbed dial in the brand's best selling integrated bracelet case, at $79.99, and the Atlas in Pearl does the same on a brown leather strap. For the simplest, cheapest white dial from a major brand, the Timex Weekender 40mm White at $119 is hard to argue with: a white dial with both 12 and 24 hour markings, luminous hands, a backlight and a fabric strap you can swap in seconds. It is a casual watch, and an honest one. Seiko's Seiko Essentials SUR312 White, at $315, is the dressier established brand white, with a clean white dial and a two tone finish.

White chronographs: panda and beyond

The Portfolio: a white panda dial and black bezel on brown leather

A white chronograph dial with contrasting subdials is one of the most loved looks in watches. The panda, white dial and black subdials, comes from racing, and the Lucky Fours Vantage in Panda is the version we would choose: a white dial, black subdials and a black tachymeter bezel on a steel bracelet, at $129.99. The Portfolio, at $89.99, puts a white panda dial and black bezel on a brown leather strap, a softer and more vintage take. Both are covered alongside the other options in our panda dial guide.

If you prefer blue to black accents, the Chronometer in Ocean Pearl, shown at the top of this page, pairs a white dial with blue subdials and a blue bezel ring at $89.99. White and blue is fresher than panda and works brilliantly with summer clothes. From Timex, the Q Timex Chronograph 40mm at $259 is the established brand white chronograph, with tonal subdials and a tachymeter bezel on a 40mm steel case and bracelet.

How to wear a white dial

White is the easiest dial to dress. It is at home with light colours, linen, white shirts and beige chinos, and it makes a navy suit look crisp. On leather, white with black is formal and white with tan is relaxed. At night, a white dial is the easiest to read but the most conspicuous; if you want something lower key for evenings, add a black or blue dial watch. That pairing is easy with the buy one, get one free offer at Lucky Fours: a Caspian in Pearl and in Noir together cost $79.99. For how white compares with other colours, see our guide to dial colours.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a white dial watch formal?

A plain white dial on a slim steel or gold case with a leather strap is the most formal everyday watch you can wear. White panda chronographs and white dial sports watches are more casual.

What is the difference between a white and a silver dial?

A white dial is flat and opaque, like paper or enamel. A silver dial is metallic, usually with a sunray or brushed finish that reflects light. Silver is softer and changes with the light; white is crisper and more legible.

What is a panda dial?

A panda dial is a white or light dial with black subdials, named for the eye patches. A reverse panda is the opposite, a black dial with white subdials. Our guide to panda dial chronographs covers the style.

Do white dials go with everything?

Nearly. White and black dials are the two most versatile choices. White suits light colours, summer clothes and formal wear especially well; black is better at night and with dark outfits.
