MVMT and Lucky Fours are two answers to the same question: what happens when a watch brand skips the jewelry store and sells straight to you online? MVMT was founded in 2013 and grew from Southern California into one of the best known fashion watch names of the last decade, with slim cases, clean dials and a lot of black and gold. Lucky Fours took a different route. Its watches echo the shapes of famous luxury sports and dress watches, they come mostly on steel bracelets, and they sell from $79.99 with a buy one, get one free offer. Same business model, opposite design philosophies.

Two ways to sell a watch online

Both brands sell from their own sites, so neither carries a retailer's margin, and both rely on promotions. MVMT shows reduced prices across much of its range, and the figures on this page are the prices its US site listed when we checked. Lucky Fours runs buy one, get one free with mix and match across the whole catalogue. A sale price and a free second watch are not the same thing: the MVMT discount lowers the cost of one watch, while the Lucky Fours offer only pays off if you want two. Our guide to spotting a real watch deal explains how to judge either kind.

Matchup one: the integrated bracelet

MVMT's MVMT Odyssey II Catalina Blue 40mm is its take on the 1970s steel sports watch: a 40mm case, a light blue dial and a bracelet that flows from the case, with a slim 8.1mm profile per MVMT's listing. The Lucky Fours Oceanus takes the octagonal bezel route, with visible screws on the bezel and a blue checkered textured dial.

The two land close on the Value Score, with the Oceanus ahead on price per watch. The MVMT is the cleaner, more modern interpretation with a stated case size and thickness. The Oceanus is the more literal echo of the famous design and costs $79.99, or about $40 a watch if you pair it with a second Lucky Fours.

Matchup two: the minimal black watch

This is MVMT's home ground. The MVMT Legacy Slim Panther Black 42mm pairs a black dial with a black steel case 7.7mm thick and a leather strap, a watch that works because there is so little to it. Lucky Fours' closest design is the Aura: an all black octagonal case, a black dial with no logo and a matching black bracelet.

The MVMT is slimmer and dressier on its strap. The Aura is bolder, more angular, and on a bracelet rather than leather, so it reads as a sports watch blacked out rather than a dress watch. If you want true minimalism, the MVMT is closer to the idea; see our list of minimalist watches for men for more of the type.

Movement

MVMT names its movements on most listings, which is a point in its favor: Japanese quartz in the Legacy and Odyssey, a solar module in the Cali Diver Solar, and automatics in the Field and GMT models. Its MVMT Field Automatic Pine Green 42.5mm at $178.80 is one of the better value automatics in our data and scores higher than any Lucky Fours quartz model. Lucky Fours lists its watches as quartz or automatic without naming the maker, with the Skeleton at $99.99 as its least expensive automatic.

Build and design range

MVMT builds in stainless steel with ion plated finishes and, on some models, ceramic cases; it mixes straps, mesh and bracelets. Lucky Fours builds in 316L stainless steel and puts almost everything on a link bracelet. The design ranges barely overlap. MVMT is minimal and fashion led, with divers and chronographs added in its own clean style. Lucky Fours is a catalogue of recognizable silhouettes: integrated bracelet sports watches, fluted bezel day date styles, racing chronographs and dive style watches.

Warranty and returns

Lucky Fours states a 12 month warranty against manufacturing defects and returns within 30 days, see the store terms. MVMT's warranty terms were not stated on the product pages we read, so check its support pages before you buy. With both brands, keep the box and paperwork until the return window closes.

Price per watch

MVMT's sale prices in our data run from about $118 to about $300 for a single watch. Lucky Fours' offer puts two Oceanus or Aura watches, or one of each, at $79.99 together, about $40 each. If you want one watch, the gap is modest; if you want two, Lucky Fours costs roughly a third as much per watch. Our overview of direct to consumer watch brands compares the pricing models of the main online names.

Which should you buy?

Buy MVMT if you want a slim, minimal watch on leather, a named Japanese movement, or an affordable automatic like the Field. MVMT does understated better.

Buy Lucky Fours if you want a steel bracelet watch with the shape of a famous design, a blacked out sports watch like the Aura, or two watches for the price of one.
