Wrapped and ready for him

The watch is the easy part. Under $100 there are dozens of good looking, well made watches, and most men would be happy with any of the ones below. The part that goes wrong is fit: a case that looks huge on a slim wrist, a bracelet that slides over the hand, a strap in a length he has to punch a new hole in. Get the size right and almost any sensible watch makes a good gift. Get it wrong and the best watch in the world stays in its box.

So this guide does it in that order. First, three ways to work out what will fit him. Then the watches we would buy for each kind of wrist and wardrobe, all under $100.

Pick how many watches you need and which designs, and see the total with the current offer applied.

Step one: work out his size

Two measurements matter. The first is the case diameter, which decides how big the watch looks. The second is the wrist circumference, which decides how much of the bracelet has to come off. You can usually get both without asking.

If he already wears a watch

This is the easy case. Look up the model he wears and note its diameter; a new watch within 2mm of it will feel familiar. While you are at it, count the links on his bracelet or note which hole his strap uses. If you can borrow the watch for an evening, lay it flat with the clasp closed and measure the inside circumference with a soft tape: that is his wrist size plus the comfortable slack he prefers.

If he does not wear one

Go by build. A slim wrist, roughly six to seven inches around, looks best with a 36mm to 39mm case. An average wrist suits 39mm to 41mm. A large wrist, above seven and a half inches, can carry 42mm and up. Our wrist size chart sets this out in detail. When in doubt, go smaller: a slightly small watch looks classic, a slightly large one looks like a mistake.

If you cannot find out at all

Buy a watch on a strap. A strap has a row of holes and fits nearly every wrist out of the box, and it can be returned untouched. A bracelet will almost always need adjusting, which is simple (links are removed with a pin pusher, or by a jeweler in a few minutes) but means the watch has been altered before he decides whether he likes it.

Step two: choose by wardrobe

With the size settled, match the watch to how he dresses. Under $100 there is a good option for every kind of wardrobe.

He wears a bit of everything

The Lucky Fours Chronometer is the watch we would give a man whose taste we only half know. It is a chronograph with three subdials, a blue bezel ring and a steel bracelet, and in the Ocean Pearl version shown above it has the white dial with contrasting subdials that collectors call a panda layout. It looks sporty with a tee and smart enough under a jacket cuff. At $89.99 it has 10 colorways, including two tone versions with gold tone details for a man who likes warmth in his watches.

He wears a suit to work

A dress watch should be thin, plain and quiet. The Casio MTP1302D Dress Watch at $89.95 is exactly that: a black sunburst dial, simple baton markers and a steel bracelet, from a brand nobody will question. If he prefers a little more presence, the Lucky Fours Auron at $89.99 has a silver sunray dial inside an octagonal bezel with visible screws, on an integrated bracelet. It is minimal in the dial and architectural in the case.

He likes how things work

The Lucky Fours Skeleton is the only automatic in this guide and the most unusual gift under $100. Its round steel case holds a blue skeleton dial that shows the movement working, so the gear train and the balance wheel are on view all day. It winds itself as he moves, which is a small piece of engineering most people have never looked at closely. At $99.99 it is one of the cheapest ways into a mechanical watch from any brand. If you want to explain it when he opens it, our guide to how automatic watches work is two minutes of reading.

He lives outdoors or in sneakers

Two watches from Timex are hard to beat here. The Timex Expedition Scout 40mm at $95 is a 40mm field watch with a clear numeral dial on a fabric strap. The Timex Weekender 38mm at $77 is a smaller 38mm watch on a slip through strap that can be swapped in seconds. Both are on straps, so both solve the sizing problem by default. For a man who runs or trains, the Timex Ironman Classic at $87 is the digital sports watch Timex has made for decades, with lap timing and a resin strap.

Before you order

Check the seller's shipping times against the date you need it, and read the return terms, especially the condition a watch must be in. Lucky Fours accepts returns within 30 days, see the store terms, and offers buy one, get one free with mix and match, which is worth knowing if there is a second birthday or anniversary coming: two watches cost one. Keep the receipt or order confirmation somewhere he can find it, and if the watch is on a bracelet, include a note that links can be removed. Our guide to giving a watch as a gift covers the rest.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size watch should I buy for a man?

Most men's watches are between 38mm and 42mm across. If he already wears a watch, match its size; if not, 39mm to 41mm suits the majority of wrists. Our watch size guide explains why lug to lug length matters as much as diameter.

Is a strap or a bracelet safer when I do not know his wrist size?

A strap. Leather, fabric and rubber straps have a row of holes and fit almost any wrist without tools. A steel bracelet usually needs links removed, which a jeweler does quickly but which makes the watch harder to return.

Is a $100 watch a good gift?

Yes. At under $100 you can buy a steel watch with a quartz movement that will keep good time for years. What you will not get is a famous name or a mechanical movement, with one exception in this guide: an automatic at $99.99.

How do I find out what watch he likes?

Look at what he already wears, or at the watches he stops to look at in shops and on other people. Color is easier to guess than style: men who dress in navy and gray tend to like blue and silver dials.
