The Best Cheap Watches for Men (That We'd Actually Wear)

There is a kind of man who says he does not wear a watch because the good ones are too expensive and the cheap ones look cheap. He is about half right. The cheap watches he has in mind exist, by the thousand: oversized chronographs whose subdials do nothing, gold that turns coppery in a month, logos that try too hard. But between those and the watches that cost a week's wages is a thin, very good band of men's watches under $100 that we would put on without a second thought.

This guide is about that band. Every watch on it passes the same five tests, and at the end we list the cheap watches that do not.

The five tests a cheap watch has to pass

These are not lab measurements. They are the questions that decide whether a watch actually leaves the drawer.

  1. Does it fit under a shirt cuff? A case much thicker than about 12mm, or wider than 42mm, catches on every sleeve. Most of the worst cheap watches fail here first.
  2. Can you read it in half a second? Clear hands against a contrasting dial. Decoration that gets in the way of the time is a fail.
  3. Is it steel where it touches you? A 316L steel case and bracelet will not discolor or irritate skin, and will look much the same in three years.
  4. Does it look like what it is? A cheap watch can borrow a design, but it should not pretend to complications it does not have.
  5. Does it go with things you already own? A watch that only suits one outfit is a watch you wear twice.

The cheap men's watches we would wear

Lucky Fours Auron: for the office

The Auron is the quietest watch Lucky Fours makes, and the one we would reach for most. An octagonal bezel fixed with small screws, a silver sunray dial with almost nothing on it, and an integrated steel bracelet. The sunray finish does the work a busier dial would otherwise do, throwing a band of light across the dial as your wrist moves. At $89.99 it passes all five tests easily: it is slim enough for a cuff, the polished hands stand out against the silver, and it looks equally right with a navy suit or a gray sweater. There are 3 colorways, including a dark gray Iron and an all black version.

Casio MTP1302D: for a suit

If your work involves a jacket and tie, the Casio MTP1302D Dress Watch at $89.95 is the most honest dress watch money can buy at this level. It has a black sunburst dial, slim hands, a date at three o'clock and a 38.5mm case on a steel bracelet. It does not look like a luxury watch and does not try to. It looks like a correct, modest watch, which is exactly what a suit asks for. If you prefer more polish, our guide to dress watches under $100 has alternatives.

Lucky Fours Aura: for evenings

An all black watch is the easiest way to wear something cheap without anyone noticing it is cheap, because a matte black finish hides the small differences in polishing that give inexpensive steel away. The Aura is a minimalist octagonal case, a black dial and a black bracelet, at $79.99. It is our choice for dinners, dark clothes and anywhere a polished steel watch would feel too bright. Our guide to all black watches for men covers the style properly.

Timex Weekender 38mm: for Saturdays

The Timex Weekender 38mm costs $77 and is designed around one idea: a slip through fabric strap you can change without tools. That makes it the most adaptable cheap watch here. Wear it on green canvas with chinos, on black for a gig, on something bright for the beach. The 38mm case is modest by modern standards, which is why it still looks right after a decade of trends.

Casio AE1200WHD: for the toolbox

Every man needs one watch he does not care about. The Casio AE1200WHD World Time at $54.95 is a digital with world time, alarms and a stopwatch on a steel bracelet. Wear it to move house, coach a team, paint a fence. It fails our fourth test in reverse: it looks exactly like what it is, a cheap and very capable tool, and that is fine.

Lucky Fours Zenith: for those who want a chronograph

Cheap chronographs are where most bad watches live, because subdials that only pretend to work are cheap to print. The Lucky Fours Zenith at $89.99 takes the classic panda layout, light subdials on a deep blue dial, and keeps it restrained, on a plain steel bracelet with no extra decoration. It is the chronograph look done with some discipline, which is rarer than it should be at this price. For more, see chronographs under $100.

Which cheap men's watches would we leave on the shelf?

We will not name brands here, because the problem is a type of watch rather than one maker. If you see any of these, keep scrolling.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good cheap watch for men?

One that fits, reads clearly, is made of steel and does not try to look like something it is not. The Casio MTP1302D, the Timex Weekender and the Lucky Fours Auron all qualify for under $100.

Do cheap watches look cheap?

Some do, usually because of oversized cases, dummy subdials or thin gold plating. A plain or well designed steel watch that fits your wrist does not. Our guide on making a cheap watch look expensive has practical fixes.

How much should a man spend on a cheap watch?

Between $50 and $100 buys a steel watch with a reliable quartz movement from a known brand. Spending less usually means resin or plated base metal; spending more starts to buy finishing rather than function.

Is it worth buying two cheap watches instead of one better one?

Often, yes. A steel watch for work and a black or strap watch for weekends cover more of your week than one $200 watch. Buy one, get one free offers make that especially easy.
