Birthday Watch Gifts for Every Budget

A birthday watch can be a small treat or the gift of a decade. We have arranged our picks by budget first, then matched them to the milestone birthdays where a watch carries extra meaning.

Birthdays are the gift occasion with the widest range. Some are a dinner and a card; some are a party with speeches and a present that is meant to be kept. A watch can be either, which is why we have built this guide around budget rather than around the person. Decide how big the gesture is, find the matching tier below, and then check the milestone section for an idea that fits the age.

Under $100: the everyday treat

At this level a watch is a fun, generous birthday present rather than a ceremony. It should have personality, since it is unlikely to be the only watch the person owns. Three we like:

The Lucky Fours Falcon at $89.99 is a sporty chronograph with a blue dial, rose gold tone accents and a navy rubber strap. Rubber is comfortable in summer, shrugs off the gym and fits most wrists without tools, which makes it an easy gift when you are unsure of size. The Lucky Fours Corsair at $79.99 goes darker: a black dial with several subdials and a black bezel, on a steel bracelet. And the Lucky Fours Tourbillon at $99.99, pictured at the top, has a blue textured dial with subdials on an integrated bracelet. Its name is a model name only: it is a Quartz watch, and a fine one to look at, but it does not have the rotating escapement that the word describes in watchmaking.

From established brands, the Casio MTP1302D Dress Watch at $89.95 is the plain, reliable option and the Timex Ironman Classic at $87 is the one for a runner. Our guide to watch gifts for him under $100 goes deeper on this tier and on sizing.

$100 to $250: the real present

This is where a birthday watch starts to feel substantial, and where the first mechanical watches appear. The Lucky Fours Demon at $200 is an automatic tool watch with a rugged case and bright dial colors on a steel bracelet: turquoise, saffron orange, yellow, red, blue and black. It looks like a serious instrument and has a cheerful face, which is a rare combination. Being automatic, it winds itself from the wearer's movement and has a sweeping seconds hand.

Heritage brands offer strong choices here too. The Casio Edifice Chronograph at $165 is a 40mm steel chronograph, the Timex Q Continental 39mm at $179 is an integrated bracelet watch with a day and date, and the Timex Marlin Quartz GMT 40mm at $249 tracks a second time zone for the friend who is always flying somewhere.

$250 to $500: the gift of the decade

For a big birthday, the strongest case is for a mechanical watch from a maker with a long history. At this level the heritage brands win on what matters most for a keepsake: the movement, the finishing and the name. We would choose between these three:

The Lucky Fours option at the entrance to this tier is the N948 at $250, an automatic dive style watch with a black dial and gold tone accents, sold on a steel bracelet, a black silicone strap or a khaki nylon strap. It is the choice for someone who would rather have a substantial mechanical watch than a famous name, and the strap versions make it easy to match to how they live: steel for the office, silicone for the beach, nylon for the weekend. Which tier is right?

A simple test: think about what the person would spend on a watch for themselves. If they would never spend more than $100, a watch at the top of the second tier is a genuine luxury to them, and a $400 watch may feel like too much to accept. If they already own a good mechanical watch, a cheaper quartz piece in a fun color often lands better than a second serious watch competing with the first. The best birthday watches sit just above what the recipient would buy, not far above it.

For a 60th, many people already own the watch they will wear for the rest of their lives. A bright, playful second watch can be a better present than a serious replacement. For someone leaving work at around the same age, our retirement watch gifts guide has a different take.

Two birthdays, one order

Lucky Fours sells buy one, get one free with mix and match. If two birthdays fall close together in your family or friendship group, both watches can go in one order for the price of one, subject to the store's terms for pairs at different prices. Keep each gift's order details for the recipient in case of an exchange. Check shipping times before ordering for a fixed date, size the bracelet by removing links if you know the wrist, and read the return terms: Lucky Fours accepts returns within 30 days, see the store terms, and every watch has a 12 month warranty.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good birthday watch for a man?

One that suits how he dresses and fills a gap in what he owns. Under $100, a steel chronograph or a minimal steel watch covers most men; for a milestone, an automatic from Seiko or Citizen is a classic choice.

Which birthday is the traditional watch birthday?

There is no fixed one, but the 18th, 21st, 30th, 40th and 50th are the birthdays when people most often give a watch, because they mark a new stage of life.

Is $100 enough for a good watch?

Yes. Under $100 you can buy a steel watch with a reliable quartz movement, and in a few cases an automatic. Our guide is a $100 watch worth it explains what you get and what you do not.

What if the birthday watch is the wrong size?

A bracelet can be shortened by removing links, which is quick and cheap at a jeweler. If it is too small or simply not liked, check the store's return terms; Lucky Fours accepts returns within 30 days, see the store terms.
