The Khaki Field starts at $675, and most Hamilton models cost more than $500. Here is what you can keep of the field watch formula for under $300, and what you give up.

The Hamilton Khaki Field is one of the most recommended first good watches for a reason. It is a plain black dial with big Arabic numerals and a 24 hour track, a 38mm steel case that suits almost any wrist, a fabric strap, and, in the Mechanical version, a hand wound Swiss movement with an 80 hour power reserve. Its design draws on the watches Hamilton supplied to the US military, and it looks right with a T shirt, a flannel shirt or a blazer. The problem is the price. The Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical 38mm costs $675, the automatic Hamilton Khaki Field Auto 38mm costs $795, and Hamilton as a whole sits mostly above $500. There is no Khaki Field under $300, and no Hamilton at all at that price in our data.
So the useful question is which parts of the Khaki Field you actually want. Break it down and there are four: the military dial, a modest size, a mechanical movement and the Swiss name. Under $300 you can have the first three, though rarely all in one watch. The fourth you cannot.

If it is the look of the Khaki Field you fell for, Timex is where to start, because the field watch is as much a part of its history as Hamilton's. The Timex Expedition Scout 40mm costs $95 and has the essential ingredients: a 40mm case, Arabic numerals with an inner 24 hour scale, a date and a fabric strap. Its movement is quartz, so it keeps better time than a mechanical watch and only asks for a battery every few years. The Timex Weekender 38mm at $77 is simpler and 38mm, the same size as the Khaki Field Mechanical, and Timex's Indiglo night light is a genuinely useful extra on a field watch.
What you give up is the finishing and the movement. The Hamilton is the more finely made watch from a Swiss maker, and its hand wound movement is the point of the watch for many owners. What you keep is the look, at less than a sixth of the price. For more in this style, our best field watches guide ranks the field.
The Citizen Terra Force is the alternative for people who want a field watch they can forget about. It is a 41.2mm field watch with Citizen's Eco Drive light powered movement, listed at $280 on Citizen's site when we checked. It needs neither winding nor regular battery changes, and Citizen states a five year warranty on its watches, longer than Hamilton's two. It is a little larger than the Khaki Field, so check the size against your wrist, but as a single watch for travel, outdoor work and every day, it is very hard to fault at the price.
For a lot of Khaki Field owners, the movement is the reason they bought it. A mechanical watch under $300 is entirely possible, though not in quite the same package.
And for the least money, the Lucky Fours Skeleton at $99.99 is an automatic in a round steel case with a blue open dial and a steel bracelet. We should be clear: it is not a field watch and does not try to look like one. The open dial shows the movement working, which the Khaki Field does not, and it costs less than a sixth of the Hamilton. If what draws you to the Khaki Field is owning a mechanical watch, it is the cheapest way in that we would point to.

New to mechanical watches? Our explainer on how automatic watches work covers winding, accuracy and what a service involves.
Half of the Khaki Field's character comes from its fabric strap. Many watches in this guide take on a field watch feel on a canvas or nylon strap, and straps are cheap. A watch on a steel bracelet with a plain dial changes character completely on khaki canvas. If you already own a simple steel watch, try that before buying anything. For pairing advice see bracelet vs strap.
The Lucky Fours watch that sits closest to this territory is the Meridian at $89.99, a pilot style chronograph with a blue panda dial on a tan suede style strap. It belongs to the aviation family rather than the infantry one, a cousin of Hamilton's Khaki Aviation line rather than the Field, and with buy one, get one free it costs about $45 a watch.
A little more money buys a mechanical field watch from a major brand. The Seiko 5 Sports Field costs $350: a black military dial with Arabic numerals, a day date window and Seiko's automatic movement on a leather strap. It is the most obvious Khaki Field rival under $400, and if you were already prepared to save for the Hamilton, it is worth a look. Our Seiko 5 Sports alternatives guide covers the line.

If you want the field watch look and nothing else, buy the Timex Expedition Scout and a spare strap, and you will still have spent less than $150. If you want a field watch you never have to think about, the Citizen Terra Force. If the mechanical movement is the point, the Lucky Fours Skeleton is the cheapest way in and the Marlin hand wound the closest experience. And if you have your heart set on the Hamilton name, save for it; the Khaki Field Mechanical is a fair price for what it is. For how the two Swiss brands compare, see Tissot vs Hamilton.

The least expensive version we found on Hamilton's US site is the Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical 38mm at $675. The automatic Hamilton Khaki Field Auto 38mm costs $795.
Not that we found. The cheapest Hamilton in our price data is the Hamilton Jazzmaster Quartz 40mm at $475, and most of the range costs more than $500.
The Timex Expedition Scout 40mm at $95. It has the same kind of military dial and a fabric strap, with a quartz movement instead of a mechanical one. Our best field watches guide lists more.
Not really. You turn the crown for a few seconds every day or two, and the watch runs until it runs down. Some owners enjoy the ritual; if you would rather not, choose an automatic or a quartz watch. See quartz vs automatic.
